The Story

Henri Lurton believes that a great wine should combine structure with elegance and possess great aromatic purity. Château Brane Cantenac’s aromatic qualities have been acknowledged for a great many years. Its bouquet develops over time. The more the wine ages, the greater power it develops.  

Brane’s greatest asset is the amazing quality of its historic terroir, because at the end of the day wine is made in the vineyard. This is why Henri Lurton attaches such great importance to vine canopy work, very strict selection and moderate yields (an average yield of 45hl/ha). Contrary to what may have been written about the estate, Brane produces a very limited quantity of First Wine. Scarcely a third of the production carries the famous gold and black label!

Written Notes

Tasted in April and September 2016. Similar TNs. Potent wine with strong backbone, well-packed with perfectly ripe fruit and tannin, well-balanced, silky with great acidity and length. Excellent effort.

Chateau Brane-Cantenac: Concentrated mixture of dark and red plum, cherry. A lot of complexity in the structure and backbone together with round ripe tannins. Acidity was gradually coming out at the back of the palate which also gave a long finish to the wine. Rich, elegant and very fresh. This is my favourite Brane-Cantenac vintage so far! 94-95+

Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Expressive nose with distinct fruit, blackcurrants and elderberries, juicy blackberries in the background. Very discreet hints of vanilla and slightly toasted oak. On the palate well structured with pure fruit, fine acidity, discreet minerality and spiciness and excellent length.

"Deep colour. Spicy, wood varnish, paneforte, dark berry liquorice aromas. Rich and voluminous with dark cherry, cassis, dark plum, paneforte flavours, looseknit chalky textures and balanced mocha oak. Finishes long and sinewy. A touch of alcohol at the finish. Delicious nonetheless. 94 points"
