The Story

One of the most ancient winegrowing estates in Bordeaux, Chateau Carbonnieux has made wine without interruptin since the 13th century. The chateau itself is an impressive building dating from the 4th century that had as many as twelve towers at one time.

The first owners - and accomplished winegrowers - were the Benedictine monks of Sainte-Croix abbey in Bordeaux, who made internationally-renowned red and white wines centuries ago. They also succeeded in introducing their pale-coloured, crystal clear white wine to the palace of the Sultan of Constantinople by labelling it 'Mineral Water Carbonnieux' to get around the prohibition against alcoholic beverages.

For over fifty years, Carbonnieux has belonged to the Perrin family, winegrowers from father to son since the early 19th century.

Located on the highest point in the commune of Leognan, on soil that is perfectly drained by a stream called L'Eau Blanche, Carbonnieux's terroir is especially conducive to producing fine quality red and white wines.

Vintage 2006

Château Carbonnieux White - 2006
67% Sauvignon – 33 % Sémillon
COLOUR: pale yellow, with green hues.

NOSE: Initially marked by the toasted aromas of the barrel. Then, when the wine is swirled, the nose reveals notes of exotic fruit, litchi, passion fruit and Mandarin orange.

PALATE: Bold and powerful initially, expressing the grilled aromas of the barrel. Still marked by the acidity of its youth, the wine shows backbone and breeding. Its structure is powerful and complex, with aromas dominated by Sémillon. A wine that will definitely reveal more in time.
Food and wine pairing: grilled fish, bass, cod, monkfish.
Our suggestion: Bass with fennel.

Written Notes

Pale lemon yellow, smokey honney and apples, with a heavy stone minerality and some wax. Very elegant acidity, some tropical overtones, but it's all about the imense minerality, fantastic! 92

Since my visit this spring and since the proprietors are less on the heavy oak that used to be a part of this estate, the wines, and especially the white ones are getting in to my favorites from the region. They have this perfect intensity of minerals, tropical fruits and lime/lemon that just makes them irresistible, and fantastic length and aftertaste. Look for vintages from 2005 and younger. Perfect with lobster, white fish with creamy sauses, grilled white fish and crayfish. Also oysters. Even asparagus with hollandaise sauce works very well.
