The Story

The vineyard is planted in 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. At around five hectares, Certan de May is a tiny jewel poised between Vieux Château Certan and Petrus. It was very strong in the 1980's, then slipped a little through the 1990's. From 2005 onwards the estate has been back on track, producing elegant yet fleshy and flamboyant wines at a very reasonable price.

Written Notes

Tasted twice - last time in July 2016. Consistent notes. First time tasted at the property in April 1996, second time tasted 20 years later in Copenhagen (bought at the property and stored in my wine-refrigerator). 34 yers old wine and only its colour can show you a bit of age. Incredibly youthful, not really big development during 20 years. In April 1996 - Very dark, tight and dense. Great intensity of perfectly ripe raspberries / blackberries / blackcurrants, rare complexity and depth, lots of super concentrated fruit with sweetness, truffle, incredibly sophisticated and long. Wow - what a blast! In July 2016 - superb nose of blackberries. intense and distinguished, very powerful on palate with astonishing richness, complexity and length. There's plenty of live left in it. Fantastic stuff!

"Tasted at restaurant Le Sommelier in Copenhagen on the 7th July 2016. I brought this bottle for dinner with a fellow wine writer from Switzerland, Yves Beck. Bought at the chateau, rested in my cellar. A bottle in pristine condition.

This bottle was simply magnificent. At age of 34 years, it's only the color of this wine which shows age. All other things in this wine are still young and lively. Superb nose of black berries, intense and distinguished, very powerful on the palate with astonishing richness, complexity and length. It's plenty of life left in it. Fantastic stuff!"
