The Story

The vineyard is planted in 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. At around five hectares, Certan de May is a tiny jewel poised between Vieux Château Certan and Petrus. It was very strong in the 1980's, then slipped a little through the 1990's. From 2005 onwards the estate has been back on track, producing elegant yet fleshy and flamboyant wines at a very reasonable price.

Written Notes

Tasted in April 2016. 70% Merlot, 25% CF and 5% CS. Delicious stuff, so silky, refined and complex, lively and really well-constructed, almost seamless, great length. Almost on the level with 2016.

  • 95p
Round and intense red berries. A bit woody and rough tannin from palate resulted in some level of bitterness. There was some high alcohol feeling in the sample. 90-91
  • 91p
Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Elegant and spicy nose, liquorice, vanilla, gingerbread spices backed by pure fruit. On the palate well structured with an opulent start and an elegant but persistent finish. Good mid-palate and convincing length.
