The Story

Whether by design or by pure chance, there are in the world exceptional places. Cheval Blanc is one of these. Combining a unique soil with a symbiotic mix of grape varieties, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, Cheval Blanc produces a wine, which has the rare quality of being good at any age. It is without doubt one of the most consistent wines in the world. Cheval Blanc's unique identity is due to its varied soils, early-ripening microclimate, the percentage of Cabernet Franc in the vineyard, and the close proximity of the finest wines of Pomerol.

Château Cheval Blanc has the rare ability to be good at whatever age. It is enjoyable young or as much as a century old in certain vintages. However, a great wine only reveals its full potential and all its subtle nuances after several years in bottle. It takes time to show its true colours and before reaching its peak. Every vintage of Cheval Blanc is made according to the traditional philosophy that great wine needs to age.
It should nevertheless be said that wines with ageing potential go through several periods, and that each one has its own type of attractiveness. This is all part of Château Cheval Blanc's fascinating complexity. Three different bottles of Cheval Blanc from the same vintage drunk at five, twenty, and forty years of age will each show a different facet of the same wine, variations on the same lovely theme. A bottle of fine wine meant to age is like a library of flavours that develop throughout its existence.
Wine is a "cultural" beverage that is very much alive and develops countless nuances over time. That is why this long waiting period needs to be respected. It is crucial to the wine's evolution, so that it can deliver its very best.

Vintage 1929

The year 1929 was an extraordinary year in the Bordeaux vineyards as well as on Wall Street. When the U.S. stock market collapsed in 1929, it produced several undesirable effects abroad, particularly in Europe, where many countries had not fully recovered from the aftermath of World War I. In Germany, the economic disaster and resulting social dislocation contributed to the rise of Adolf in the United States, there were 16 million unemployed – about a third of the available labor force.

In Bordeaux, the 1929 is one of the “legendary” vintages of the century. Its reputation was made even greater as the 1930s were truly a disastrous decade, and it wasn't until 1945 that anything of equivalent quality was made. In Bordeaux, these sixteen years were one of the longest “dark periods” of the 20th century. The year 1929 was extremely hot and dry, the driest since the turn of the century. It only rained for a short time during harvest, but the nice warm weather returned. The grapes became very concentrated, rich in tannins and produced wine to last.

Written Notes

Last time I drank this beautiful Cheval Blanc I was having dinner at Domaine de Chevalier. We tasted it blind and it was fairly uncomplicated to guess the vintage. It possessed the characteristic sweetness and charm of the 1929 vintage. Still very fresh and lovely. Decanted one hour. Very harmonious and balanced. On the nose rich aromas of ripe fruit, tobacco and minerals. Full-bodied, with a fabulous balance of lovely, rich fruit flavours and silky texture and just enough grip to keep it alive. Plenty of white chocolate and smooth coffee flavours on the finish. Drink now.

Mahogany colour with brick red hue. Expressive and quite refined and perfumed nose, aromatic nose with fine toasting, cold smoke, balmy spices, hints of gingerbread in the background. On the palate great persistence with multi-layered character, fine acidity and excellent flavour. A great classic.

Mediumn intense, brick red colour. Refined and complex toasty nose, with ripe plums. Medium-bodied, broad and elegant texture on palate. Supple, rich and round with vivid lingering finish. A super tasty wine! – JL 97p (Aug 2023)

Last time I drank this it came from a ½ bottle at a dinner at Domaine de Chevalier. We tasted blind and I guessed the vintage. It had the characteristic sweetness and charm of ‘29. Still fresh and lovely.
