The Story

Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a testament to the legacy of Jacques Perrin, a true visionary in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. A pioneer in both embracing and refusing new possibilities, he was first to replant all 13 grape varieties, he was a pioneer in his winemaking, but equally visionary in refusing to use chemicals in his vineyard, turning instead to organic and then biodynamic viticulture, decades ago.

Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a truly unique wine, a blend built around very old vines of Mourvedre, planted at the nothern edge of the property, itself at the northern edge of the appellation.

First crafted in 1989, to unanimous acclaim, this cuvée is only produced in vintages that meet the family's exacting standards. 2014, like almost every vintage of Hommage, will be for the patient ones. It is a vintage of compelling freshness, finesse, and elegance. A refined, almost delicate Hommage, rather than a flamboyant one, reminiscent of 2001 rather than 2007.

Production is extremely limited, to less than 6000 bottles. In 2014, it was even less.

Written Notes

Beaucastel has had some problems with the dreaded brett in the past but any suggestion of such issues now seem to be well behind it. Certainly, no evidence of it here. No evidence of anything but a stupendous wine. One sometimes wonders if some of the Rhone wines that have come out in recent years as 'flagships', with monumental price tags, are intended for nothing other than to jump on the Parker bandwagon and cash in while they can, with massive, overheated wine bombs. This is certainly a wine that has attracted very favourable reviews from Parker and high points. Well, he got it spot on. This is a brilliant, wonderful wine.

First made in 1989, it is a curious blend of 60% mourvedre, 20% grenache, 10% syrah and 10% counoise, though that can change in certain years such as 1998 which favoured grenache. It is only made in top years and only in small quantities, never more than 5,000 bottles, and usually considerably less.

It is ripe, big and full-flavoured. Finishes with ultra thin tannins and is incredibly long. So long. A mix of flavours with dry herbs and lots of cherry notes. This is a brilliant wine by any standard. The colour was so bright that it is simply impossible to imagine it is pushing a decade of age. It is sooo young.

60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 10% Counoise and 10% Syrah from old vines on the best Beaucastel plots. Generally only 750 cases made per year. Grapes are destemmed and the wine is aged for 18 months in used French oak barrels.
Browning garnet with brick rim. Gorgeously aromatic with bottle-aged aromas of undergrowth, sweetly senescent red fruits, spicy, meaty, soy. Gorgeously fresh and complex and very long. (JH)
