The Story

Château Gilette (4,5 ha) is situated in the centre of the village of Preignac. The vines are surrounded by walls which protect them from the prevailing winds and facilitate the mist so necessary for the formation of botrytis cinerea in years that are too dry.

The 15 to 20 regular harvesters from the estate have the delicate mission only to pick perfectly desiccated grapes. The grapes are selected berry by berry and placed in small crates. The long vat-ageing of 15 to 18 years then begins. The very long period will generate slow ageing which will allow the wine to develop the richness, volume and intensity of a mature wine without being oxidized.

Vintage 1979

Bordeaux / The year 1979 partly repeated the 1978 vintage with a wet and cool spring, a hot summer, a cool and dry autumn. Dry whites did well this year while reds, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, struggled to reach full physiological maturity. Once again, Mouton was a disappointment. The right bank did better with Merlot. The best wine of the vintage is the first Le Pin ever produced. Other excellent wines worth mentioning are La Mission Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion. Haut-Brion was a bargain at 200 euros. Sauternes wines also turned out to be quite good, the best of which was Yquem.

Written Notes

Amber. Some raisins, light apricots, some sultanas nose, detailed, touch smoky towards the notes of 1979 ABSLs Terrantez in fact, light nutty note, detailed and layered. Fresh acidity, ripe and fruity, dried fruits, fairly intense attack before a more delicate and detailed finish, pure, nuanced, long finish. 96

Tasted in April 2010. Consistent notes. Same style as 1981 but I find 1979 more powerful, richer and longer on the palate.
