The Story

Château Gilette (4,5 ha) is situated in the centre of the village of Preignac. The vines are surrounded by walls which protect them from the prevailing winds and facilitate the mist so necessary for the formation of botrytis cinerea in years that are too dry.

The 15 to 20 regular harvesters from the estate have the delicate mission only to pick perfectly desiccated grapes. The grapes are selected berry by berry and placed in small crates. The long vat-ageing of 15 to 18 years then begins. The very long period will generate slow ageing which will allow the wine to develop the richness, volume and intensity of a mature wine without being oxidized.

Vintage 1985

Bordeaux 1985/ An extraordinary vintage. Particularly elegant in their early years, these wines are now mellow and suave with considerable finesse. The Médoc wines, supple with mellow tannins, are deliciously soft and fruity. The Pomerols and Saint Emilions possess a marvellous combination of concentration and finesse. The dry white wines are rich and complex. The sweet wines are ample, honeyed and fruity.

Written Notes

The first Sauternes was a 1967 Chateau Gillete. Bipin shared how the Gillete was actually ‘aged in cement, and Prats remarked how it ‘smells of a dirty, old cellar.’ Aromas of honey, honeycomb, candle wax, dates and waxy, dried peach and apricot fruit graced its complex nose. There was medium body and sweetness here, along with more candle wax flavors. It had a smooth, nutty finish and seemed mature. There were touches of secondary underarm aromas, and the wine was a bit minerally and ceramic on its finish. Delmas found that it did not have ‘the usual aromas of Sauternes.’ Barton called it ‘against the rules,’ and Chevalier commented that Gilette just bottled their ’86 recently. Prats wondered how they made their wines and whether it was a ‘solera system’ or if they just smothered it with sulfur

Consistent notes. Very honeyed and almondy flavors on the nose and palate, candied mandarine/orange/lemon peel, excellent acidity with slight bitterness, which keeps this wine fresh and alive.

(Demi) Absolutelly gorgeous brilliant golden colour. Nose reminiscent of a 76 Rheingau Auslese with overripe yellow and green apples, yellow plums, touch of minerals and a slight petroleum feel to it. Fresh acidity that is incredibly balanced with the sweetness. You never notice it but the wine is never cloying either. Lovely balance, not that complex, but fine length.
