Haut-Brion Blanc is as renowned as it is scarce, with only about 8,000 bottles available per vintage for a very demanding market. It is often regarded as the greatest white of Bordeaux, although Haut-Brion Blanc’s sibling, Laville Haut-Brion, sometimes equals and occasionally surpasses it. The white vineyards at Haut-Brion are planted to 63 percent Sémillon and 37 percent Sauvignon Blanc, a weighting that gives this wine its particularly plush combination of Sémillon-driven body and Sauvignon-influenced scent of musk. Haut-Brion Blanc ages beautifully.
White Bordeaux does not come much more layered and powerful than this. Strong oak roasted nut notes are evident on the nose but dissipate quickly on the palate. Taut yet shapely refreshing but rich. A large framed wine that manages to find harmony. Alongside exotic touches of stone fruit there are some wonderfully energising fruit characteristics of crystallised lemon rind, grapefruit and lime. Long, complex and very intense without being too weighty.
2012 vintage notes
The 2012 vintage was uneven from bud break, which was disturbed by a cool, wet month of April, to vОraison (color change), which took place over a long period. Fortunately, the months of July and August 2012 were ideal: warm and dry. This fine summer weather enabled us to do everything possible in the vineyard in order to make up for the poor spring weather. For two months, our team worked meticulously to make ripening as homogeneous as possible, and removed any green grapes at vОraison. The harvest for both red and white wines began under sunny skies. 2012 is a truly fine vintage for early-ripening terroirs such as ours.
2012 Château Haut-Brion’s tasting notes :
There is quite a contrast here between the bouquet and the palate. The bouquet is very fresh with overwhelming citrus (pink grapefruit) aromas leading one to expect a very crisp wine. However, it starts out quite rich on the palate, with a great deal of power. The vivaciousness that seemed at first to be only on the nose returns on the aftertaste, accounting for a wonderful long finish. A great vintage for Château Haut-Brion blanc.
