The Story

La Mission-Haut-Brion's vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 7%) lie on a large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel bank interspersed with clay. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (100% new) for 18 months. The wines of La Mission Haut Brion are rich, oaky and powerful and need at least 10 years of bottle ageing before they should be broached.

Vintage 1949

Most probably one of the best Mission wines. The wine explodes in the glass then in the mouth, showing first a complex nose then the mouth follows. A pleasant wine of considerable breed, aromatic, full of fineness, showing a heavy truffled and gamy touch on the palate. A very good bottle now but can age for a few more years

Current vintage notes
A dry year, but above all very hot. A very great vintage, difficult to make because
of the heat. Some wines suffered because of it, but on the whole it is a year of great quality.

Written Notes

This wine had fabulous and catching aroma of truffles and dark cherries. Even if palate wasn't as stunning as nose, this wine was extremely well-composed, in fine balance and fresh. Almost a perfect wine, which will keep 4-6 years more.

Roasted herbs, smoky black currant, some meatiness on the nose, nuts and sweet earth. This is a spellbinding wine, with soy, spices, and liqueur notes almost, sweet and yet suave on the opening. There is a layered sensuality here, a Graves quintessential poise with a ’49 depth and richness, the grip and delineation and the stupendous reverberating finish are just amazing, alive with notes of chocolate and blackcurrant. This wine is a majestic testament to nuanced intensity. A wine of great concentration and silky finesse throughout, with enough stuffing to catch you delightfully by surprise, repeatedly. 99 Points

Still quite deep colour. Soft sweet fruit – a joy to drink. Perfect now but should drink well for the next 10 years or so. Decant shortly before drinking.
