The Story

La Mission Haut Brion is situated in Bordeaux' southern suburb, Talence. From 1919 and until 1983, it was Woltner family, who had owned this property. Under Woltner's reign, La Mission Haut Brion experienced one of its greatest period with string of fine vintages and was considered then as fully on the level with First Growths and sometimes even better than these. In 1983, owners of Haut Brion purchased La Mission Haut Brion and today its Jean Philippe Delmas, who's responsible for this property.

La Mission-Haut-Brion's vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 7%) lie on a large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel bank interspersed with clay. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (100% new) for 18 months. The wines of La Mission Haut Brion are rich, oaky and powerful and need at least 10 years of bottle ageing before they should be broached.

Wine Information

An example of a rare occurrence: a good year that gets off to a late start. The coloring of the grapes began on August 22nd and the harvest took place in October. June was dry, July normal, August dry, September near normal. This year suffered from its proximity to the great year of 1961, but the 62's are very good, and they were slow to come around.

Vintage 1962

Bordeaux Vintage Report by Tb / If 1962 was also a fabulous year, it fell irrevocably in the shadow of 1961. The cold winter, with its biting frosts, allowed the vines to get a well-deserved rest after their hard work in 1961. The growing season started three weeks late. When the vines finally sprouted in mid-June, the weather improved. Toward fall, the weather warmed measurably, with the resulting drought ultimately having a negative impact on the vines. The few bountiful September harvests arrived just in time to save the grapes from vine wilting. The harvest, which resulted in the largest harvest of the 1950s and 1960s, did not begin until October 1. Few people believed that the vintage would be as good as it became. An excellent vintage for dry whites, reds and Sauternes. As for Sauternes, the year 1962 is clearly better than that of 1961. The best reds were Cheval Blanc, Pétrus and Mouton-Rothschild. A common characteristic of the best wines from 1962 today is their serene and balanced appearance. Only a few show real body and complexity, but they work well especially as dinner wines, also because of their excellent availability and affordability. Even the best wines should not be decanted for more than an hour.

Written Notes

Tasted twice - last time in July 2014. Not consistent notes. Medium red. Splendid nose of sweet berries added some chocolate. Complex, deep and concentrated on the palate, elegant, gracious and with fine length. Delicious wine, which really has been able to keep beautiful. No signs of advanced age here! 8 years later (2014), this wine seemed fully mature and had a smell, some wine-freaks say is typical of old La Mission, oysters. There were also, extracted coffee beans and fading fruit. I rated it 88p. Probably not a bottle from same source as the one tasted in September 2006.
