The Story

Between the estates of Pétrus and La Fleur-Pétrus, amid vineyards, stands a stone house with closed shutters. The road that winds to the house between the vine rows has no signs or indications as to the name of the place. The construction looks more like a maintenance shed for the neighbouring estates than the main building of a winery. However, this is a house that makes one of the most desirable wines in Bordeaux: Château Lafleur.

Lafleur’s wines form an interesting contrast to their neighbour, Pétrus. Their terroirs differ significantly, even though the distance between them is only 50–100 metres. Whereas Pétrus is more seductively rich, full-bodied and intense, Lafleur is charming in its elegance, femininity and subtlety.
Lafleur’s wines are delightful, but they do require aging for at least twenty years in order to display their full, nuanced character. Guinaudeau’s investments into improving quality in all of Lafleur’s functions promise an even better future for the friends of Lafleur. Although tasting the 1947, 1950, 1961, 1975 or 1982, one can only wonder whether Lafleur’s wines could get any better?

Written Notes

There was one more wine on this starry night, a 1961 Lafleur from an original wood case with great provenance. Ok now. Gentleman Jim found it ‘Burgundian,’ and Big Boy hailed it as ‘superior wine.’ ‘Perfect Pomerol’ and ‘wine of the night from the nose’ came from the crowd. This bottle was incredibly youthful, much less developed than the couple of others that I have been fortunate to try. Its fresh purple cascaded into a creamy pool of honeyed deliciousness. ‘Nuff said (96+).

Inside Information

Wine Advocate #103

Robert M. Parker, Jr. 98 Drink: 1994 - 2014 $5200
I had poor luck with the 1961 Lafleur until several years ago. In four recent tastings, this wine has been at the upper end of my scale. This particular bottle was extremely young, with an opaque garnet/black color, and a powerful nose of black truffles, sweet, over-ripe cherry fruit, and grilled meats. A sensational wine, with huge body, massive extraction, great exuberance, and considerable tannin in the thick, exotic finish, it is not yet close to full maturity.

The notes for this wine are taken from the description of Series III - Flight D of the 1995 tasting conducted in Munich by Helga and Hardy Rodenstock. Many years after the tasting from which this note derives allegations were made concerning the authenticity of old and rare bottles of wine sold by Hardy Rodenstock to collectors around the world. The matter has been the subject of numerous articles, litigation and at least one book. Mr. Parker believes that the wines served to him at this tasting were authentic so this note and the others from that specific tasting continue to be posted on eRobertParker.com.

"Pomerol fruit with the plum, game, motor oil and Sambuca. The wine was thick, meaty and just plain awesome. The palate was massive with thick, rich and heavy fruit and lots of minerals and length. The wine was incredible, but this bottle had a shred less fruit than two previous 99-pointers, so it had to settle for a mere 98 points "
