The Story

Between the estates of Pétrus and La Fleur-Pétrus, amid vineyards, stands a stone house with closed shutters. The road that winds to the house between the vine rows has no signs or indications as to the name of the place. The construction looks more like a maintenance shed for the neighbouring estates than the main building of a winery. However, this is a house that makes one of the most desirable wines in Bordeaux: Château Lafleur.

Lafleur’s wines form an interesting contrast to their neighbour, Pétrus. Their terroirs differ significantly, even though the distance between them is only 50–100 metres. Whereas Pétrus is more seductively rich, full-bodied and intense, Lafleur is charming in its elegance, femininity and subtlety.
Lafleur’s wines are delightful, but they do require aging for at least twenty years in order to display their full, nuanced character. Guinaudeau’s investments into improving quality in all of Lafleur’s functions promise an even better future for the friends of Lafleur. Although tasting the 1947, 1950, 1961, 1975 or 1982, one can only wonder whether Lafleur’s wines could get any better?

Vintage 1985

Bordeaux 1985/ An extraordinary vintage. Particularly elegant in their early years, these wines are now mellow and suave with considerable finesse. The Médoc wines, supple with mellow tannins, are deliciously soft and fruity. The Pomerols and Saint Emilions possess a marvellous combination of concentration and finesse. The dry white wines are rich and complex. The sweet wines are ample, honeyed and fruity.

Written Notes

We were back to our regular programming with a not-so-regular 1985 Lafleur. This was all about its blackness in a fruit and olive way. It was a dark and brooding wine, showing the other side of Lafleur. Lafleurs can be super sweet and kinky, or dark and brooding, almost in Jekyll and Hyde fashion depending on the vintage. This still had some classic kink without being overly sweet, although it did get a touch sweeter in the nose. The Copperhead found it ‘a touch dry,’ without trying to be negative (94).

12.5% Lovely ripe, mature, fleshy Pomerol. The first wine that has been truly relaxed and fully on evolved song. Very gorgeous on the nose. Rich and herbal (though definitely not herbaceous. Sweet, almost caramel nose that was extremely seductive gave way to a rather jagged palate on which the tannins are furry and intrusive. What a shame! Much less graceful finish than beginning. Finishes a little suddenly. Hint of menthol on the finish. It is softening in the glass but the acidity is notable. Fresh and refreshing – a midway wine between the old and new eras. Became increasingly spiky in the glass.

First vintage at the property made by cousin of Robin sisters, Jacques Guinaudeau and his wife, Sylvie. Tasted in September 2012. Quite dark, matured flavours of cherries and truffles, broad and intense on palate, delicious velvety tannin, exquisite balance, long and sophisticated, persistent and smooth aftertaste. At its very peak right now. Excellent stuff.
