The Story

Laville Haut-Brion is arguably the greatest dry white wine in Bordeaux. 

Only 1,000 cases per year are produced from a tiny and exclusive 3.7 hectare vineyard with an average vine age of over 50 years. It is a blend of 70% Sémillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc - the grapes are barrel-fermented and the wine is matured in 100% new oak barriques for 15-18 months before being bottled.

Aromatically complex on the nose and almost lusciously rich on the palate, with strong mineral overtones, and with a finish to die for. The wine demands extended cellaring and should rarely be approached before its 10th birthday. Laville-Haut-Brion is classified as a Graves Cru Classé.

Haut-Brion Blanc 1966 is for me the white wine of the vintage. I have had opportunity to taste it several times, and it has never let me down. Always a real charmer – elegant and classic. This one has a good lower-neck level and was decanted one and half hours. It has a superb, fresh nose of honeyed fruits and toasty oak. Massively rich and intense wine with excellent complexity and balance. While it does not possess the weight and body of blockbuster vintages such as the 1945 and 1959, it was very “big” in its own charming, feminine way. Velvety and elegant with a texture more like old grand cru Montrachet than a severe white dry Graves. Got better and better in the glass. A very exiting wine with an everlasting finish.

1966 Laville Haut Brion – White wines do not often make my annual list of the The Top Ten Best Wines tasted. I personally do not own the great white wines, most of which are white Burgundies. So I only get the chance to taste them on an infrequent basis. This bottle was served double blind to my tasting group, 7 Blind Men. I know, it really is a fun group that I am lucky to be a part of. When tasted, there was not one person that called the wine as being over 25 years of age. The wine deserves a spot on my Top Ten Best Wines tasted in 2016 because it was so young, fresh, vibrant, complex and enjoyable at 50 years years of age. 96 Pts

 1966 Laville Haut Brion – Deep yellow in color, with a crushed rock, vanilla, marzipan, citrus, butterscotch, popcorn and lemon liqueur nose, it was hard to put the glass down. Rich, almost oily in texture, with ample freshness, the finish did not seem to quit. It remained with you for at least 40 seconds! The wine did not lose its fruit in the glass during the dinner. 97 Pts

An extremely subtle nose with a character of herbs, spices, petrol, wax and a surprising amount of fruitiness. The taste is well-balanced, its fruitiness intense. A suitably refreshing level of acidity and a rich oily mouth feel. A ripe wine very alive still, can be aged between 5 to 10 years.
