The Story

The red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. Serge Hochar, who has been involved with the property since 1959, states that the Cabernet Sauvignon provides "the bones and the skeleton to the wine, the Carignan the flesh and muscle and the Cinsault the silky smooth finesse".

Musar wines are unique in that Hochar blends the varietals only after they have spent three years in barrels and then waits a further four years before releasing the end result. This gives time for each variety to unfold its own character. The wines are extremely long-lived, with the best examples lasting for 20-30 years.

Wine Information

This elegant, fragrant, Cinsault-dominated vintage arose from a cool year. Cold, rainy weather lasted until June (resulting in late flowering); summer was sunny but there was no rain. Picking began on September 9th; maturity was variable but the grapes were healthy and fermentation proceeded slightly faster than usual.

“Developed, gamey aromas. Well structured with a fine acidity, medium body, and good length. Decanter Rating: 4 Stars.” – Decanter.com

Written Notes

1998 Chateau Musar rouge: Bronzing ruby color. Sweeter fruit on the nose. Palate was fuller than the 1999, more explosive and spicy. More advanced in its development. More Burgundian. Great development with finesse, elegance. Light palate feel. Good Brett. Complex yet seamless. Savory. Velvety. Huge length. Chateau Musar is the wine world’s perfect spy. Even though this is more Burgundian, if you put it in a blind tasting with Bordeaux or Burgundies or Chateauneuf du Pape, every time it would fool tasters to make them think it one of those.
(Magnum) Opened for about eighteen hours. Deep ruby, garnet rim, lots of sediments. Floral, cedar, spicy, scented, licorice, figs and prunes. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, elegant and slightly fruit sweet, elegant and refreshing, long finish. Lovely. Norway is one of the only markets to have this in magnum.

Moderately light, bright, ruby red colour. Medium intense leathery nose with red fruits, nutty, dill and milk chocolate. Dry, nice acidity with intense red fruits, strawberries and red currants with cigar notes. Very delicate tannins are well-integrated into delicately intense fruitiness. Delicate lingering long finish. This wine is in very drinkable stage now, will age easily another 10-12 years.
