The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Second, purchase wine that is at least 10 to 20 years old, because a young Pétrus is difficult to approach, besides which oak and tannins predominate in its taste. Young Pétrus may be impressive, but it ages fantastically and requires more time than any other Pomerol wine to reach its culmination. Finally, We would advise you to decant the wine with care and well in advance, and also to give it time to develop in the glass. Then you will have the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable experience.

Little known 50 years ago, this château has seen the rise of a myth about the uniqueness of its wine. The wine’s inimatibility is due to many factors, first of all, an exceptional terroir - 40 meters above sea level, the highest point of the appellation - with a layer of heavy clay soil and an iron subsoil. These are ideal conditions for the expression of the Merlot grape. With such a special terroir, the approach in the vineyard and cellar is traditional and respectful.

The work done in the vineyard is fastidious - severe pruning in the winter, regular ploughing, crop-thinning, de-leafing, manicuring the clusters in the summer - and allows the perfect ripening of the fruit. The grape are manually harvested within two afternoons and sorted before crush.

Fermentation is carried out gently, without any overextraction, in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. The blend, very often pure Merlot, is defined in December and the young wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels.

This property made famous by Madame Edmond Loubat and then by Monsieur Jean-Pierre Moueix, culminates at 130 feet on the plateau of Pomerol. Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix is responsible for the cultivation, vinification and aging as well as the export distribution of Petrus wines.

Wine Information

1955 began with unstable weather conditions just before summer, but turned into an extremely favourable season by the end of the year. A beautiful, sunny and warm—if not hot—period prevailed throughout August and September, until the just the right amount of much-needed rain came along. The crop turned out to be of the highest quality.

However, because the vintage was overshadowed by the 1953, it offering wines with a good price-quality ratio that can still be enjoyed today. Ripe grapes and autumn rain guaranteed an excellent year for Sauternes wines. The wines of this vintage vary widely in quality, and many are dominated by tannins. Only the finest wines, such as the Lafleur, Pétrus, Cheval Blanc and Mouton-Rothschild, offer balance and richness.

Written Notes

The 1955 Petrus is a wine that I have tasted on two or three occasions courtesy of Belgian and château bottlings. Significantly, it was the final Petrus before the devastating spring frosts the following year. The Belgian bottling leaves something to be desired, yet the château bottling attests a splendid Pomerol that is still holding up well. There is always something a little more rustic about pre-1956 vintages of Petrus. The aromatics stride boldly along with dark berry fruit that occasionally suggest there might have been a bit of Malbec in the vineyard back then. Dark berries, coniferous forest, undergrowth and a light chlorophyll scent on the nose that never quite clicks into fifth gear. Yet the palate is utterly harmonious, veering more to the red side of the fruit spectrum with touches of mint. Like many 1955 Right Banks, it is not a showy or extravagant Petrus, but is rather “statesmanlike” and “noble”. Taken from the “Pomerol” book.

Enjoyed during dinner at Domaine de Chevalier with other excellent wines in March 2015. Powerful and well-equiped with lush fruit, tannin and acidity. Breathtaking richness and depth, long long finish. Great, great bottle!

Healthy colour. Good nose with a touch of raspberry. Sweet and charming. Not a „big“ Pétrus but very attractive. 93 pts
  • 93p
Relatively pale brick red colour. The nose is dusty with vegetal notes, forest floor as well as roasted meat like aromas. The palate is smooth and plump with no real back bone present. The wine is on its way down but still enjoyable today.

Relatively pale brick red colour. The nose is dusty with vegetal notes, forest floor as well as roasted meat like aromas. The palate is smooth with velvety tannins. Low fruit intensity shows mainly dried fruits, like prunes. The acidity is not capable on refreshing up the taste and the result is plump taste with no real back bone present. The wine in this bottle is on its way down but still enjoyable today.
