The Story

Our Grand Vin Château Pichon Baron, classified as a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is made with grapes from the oldest vines on the estate’s historic plots. This quintessential Pauillac offers an intense and profound sensory experience of great complexity. Château Pichon Baron exhibits elegance, intensity and exceptional length on the palate. It is a wine that improves year after year and can age for over 40 years in the cellar.

The reputation of Pichon Baron until the 1960s was superior to that of Pichon Lalande across the road, it was also placed above Pichon Lalande in the Classification of 1855. But on the death of Jean Bouteillier in 1961 its reputation began to sink. His eldest son Bertrand was still young and inexperienced and there was a lack of money for necessary investments leading to a decline in quality of the wines during the 1960s and 1970s. During the 1980s there were signs of recovery but not at the same speed as with many other properties during this time and certainly nowhere near that of Pichon-Lalande that had prospered enormously under the care of May de Lencquesaing to become one of the first "Super-seconds".

Wine Information

In a year when nature proved her generosity, human intervention was key to maintaining balance in the almost over-abundant growth. Weather conditions were ideal for ripening the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which meant that the vintage kept the full freshness of the fruit.

Clear, young and bright in colour, with dark, almost bluish glints. Fresh, complex notes of fruit mingle with rose and summer berry aromas. Tannins are round, generous and juicy yet delicate.

Well-balanced and harmonious, this is a wine which expresses both the integrity of the terroir and the crispness of fruit.

Written Notes

Still dark blackish crimson core but a ruby rim. Firm colour. Classic cedary nose and very fluid and juicy.  Spicy finish and not as intensely fruity as it once was.A few lightly dusty tannins in the back ground. Very appetising though. Good fragrance. Opened up in the glass to become an absolutely classic left bank claret with just the right amount of fruit and an appetising but not painful dry cedary finish. Tasted alongside Troplong Mondot, it was a very worthy, delightful representative of fine Médoc. I can't see it getting any better though. Fruit is gentle fading.

Tasted at home. Bought shortly after release. Level: Into neck.

I decanted this bottle for 1 hour but for perfect bottles like this one 2 hours would be even better. The 1990 Pichon-Baron confirmed from the first moment onwards that it is perhaps the best Pichon-Baron ever and one of the truly greatest Bordeaux wines of vintage 1990. The colour is very healthy, bright, quite dark without brown edges.

The nose terrific, a wonderful combination of sweetness, ripe but not overripe dark berries, significantly roasted flavours, finest cedar wood, fresh and lively. From the nose I would never guess that this is a 27 year old Bordeaux, its bouquet is much younger. In taste it has everything I look for in a classic Bordeaux, the sweetness of a great vintage, velvety fruit perfectly balanced by significant acidity and tannins, which results in perfect harmony. The 1990 Pichon-Baron takes you on cloud nine, you simply wish the bottle would never be empty. This is a wine to share with the ones you really love. Great length, my guess is that well stored bottles will provide outstanding pleasure for the next 20 years.

Food: Well hung Filet de Boeuf of best origin

Ruby, tobacco, prunes, cassis, leather and mint. Layered and seductive. Quite intense, feels robust. Fresh acidity, almost lively, elegant but slightly hollow mid-palate. Long.
