The Story

Our Grand Vin Château Pichon Baron, classified as a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855, is made with grapes from the oldest vines on the estate’s historic plots. This quintessential Pauillac offers an intense and profound sensory experience of great complexity. Château Pichon Baron exhibits elegance, intensity and exceptional length on the palate. It is a wine that improves year after year and can age for over 40 years in the cellar.

The reputation of Pichon Baron until the 1960s was superior to that of Pichon Lalande across the road, it was also placed above Pichon Lalande in the Classification of 1855. But on the death of Jean Bouteillier in 1961 its reputation began to sink. His eldest son Bertrand was still young and inexperienced and there was a lack of money for necessary investments leading to a decline in quality of the wines during the 1960s and 1970s. During the 1980s there were signs of recovery but not at the same speed as with many other properties during this time and certainly nowhere near that of Pichon-Lalande that had prospered enormously under the care of May de Lencquesaing to become one of the first "Super-seconds".

Wine Information

This vintage caused great excitement during production, as perfect weather made it a true revelation: conditions were cool but constant, leading to a late harvest and a successful aromatic expression which retained power and freshness.

This vintage takes full advantage of the complexity of these superb Cabernet terroirs. Perfect end of the season weather did justice to this outstanding grape variety, revealing red and dark fruit followed by notes of liquorice, cocoa and rare spices. The dark colour reflects the abundance of tannins, which are refined and fresh, invigorating and ultra-powerful but still charming and well balanced. Exceptional length rounds off this wine’s superb expression.

Written Notes

Solid depth of colour, this is much more in the riper style, bright damson fruit, high toned, elderberry, cool fruit, open, accessible, charming but dense, I’m thinking Pomerol, packed full, lush and long, dark chocolate, really like the relaxed nature, it’s effortless, long leathery notes. This is ripe but structured with good acidity.

A rich, dense ruby color, hints at the dark fruit nose of blackberry and currant that carries through to the palate, interwoven with complex aromas of black licorice, anise and crème de cassis. On the palate, the wine opens up to reveal an earthiness, with brown spice, cigar box and ripe dark fruits that linger throughout the extracted and long finish. The texture is opulent and rich, yet has a velvety quality with supple density. Rich, fine-grained tannins are balanced with ripe fruit, acidity and oak.

This is very pure and sleek in feel, with an iron note running from start to finish while cassis, cherry and damson plum fruit plays out. The long, focused finish has light bay and savory hints while letting the minerality sing.

  • 95p

Cedary fragrance. Wonderful only-Bordeaux-can-do-this fresh finesse and restraint even though there's power and determination. Elegant, seems so fine boned even with plenty of tannin. Has restraint but incredible length.

2010 Pichon Baron was a big balls wine with power and concentration at highest gear, dense and tight, and with unlimited longevity. I remember that this wine like many others wasn't that stunning and expressive from barrel in April 2011. After bottling it's become a different wine which improved a lot and has turned into superstar. 98p.

Ruby. Cassis, dark fruits, vanilla, spices, detailed and fruity nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, detailed, fruity, nuanced, spices, fresh and lively, very long. Served from Zalto Universal, and for me this glass cuts it's wings off. 96

Administrator Christian Seeley thinks the 2010 is the greatest Pichon Longueville Baron he has ever made, equaling some of the estate's colossal wines from vintages such as 1989 and 1990. It was certainly showing well when I stopped by the chateau in January. Opaque purple, with loads of charcoal, licorice, incense and some exotic Asian spices along with abundant cassis liqueur, blackberry and hints of roasted coffee and spring flowers, it is full-bodied and opulent, with relatively high tannins, but they have sweetened up considerably and seem less aggressive than they did from barrel. The oak is clearly pushed to the background by the wine's wealth of fruit, glycerin and full-bodied texture. This sensational Pichon Longueville Baron needs 5-6 years of cellaring, and should keep 30+ years.

MOGNAD 2020–40+.
