Wine Information

John Reynell was one of the pioneers of Australian wine and is credited with establishing the first vineyard in South Australia. The fate of the Reynells, however, is sad. Like so many other Australian families, they were decimated by war.

Carew Reynell lost his life at Gallipoli in the Dardanelles in 1915. His son Richard was a test pilot for the Hawker Hurricane and perished in the Battle of Britain in 1941. A succession of family tragedies saw the end of a family winemaking dynasty in 1971 although control was relinquished in 1953.

The Reynell family contribution to the Australian wine industry is remembered by the Reynell Clone of Cabernet Sauvignon, extensively grown in Coonawarra. Constellation Brands Australia is now headquartered at Chateau Reynella. The grounds are fully restored, including the Old Cave Cellar, registered by the National Trust as a place of historic importance.

Reynell Basket Press Shiraz, an opulent, deep-set, choco-berry flavoured style with plenty of supporting oak and the more structured Reynell Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon are distinctive Mclaren Vale wines. Chateau Reynella Vintage Port, like Hardy’s, exemplifies a traditional fortified style. The old Chateau Reynella wines are worth seeking out.
