Beautiful pale gold colour.
The initial nose offers remarkable depth. Aeration reveals the complexity of truly great years. All the characteristics are present: freshness, precision, and purity.
On the palate, the wine presents an impressive combination of power and finesse. The finish is tremendously long and harmonious. As is often the case in exceptional vintages, the sweetness is masked by the wine’s balance. A magnificent Rieussec that is already sublime and will still be so in ten and many more years’ time.

The Story

Château Rieussec has been a leading wine in Sauternes for several generations. Ranked as a Premier Grand Cru in 1855, it is made with a subtle blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle. Production varies a great deal depending on the vintage, but on average is about 6,000 cases (however, none was made in 1977, 1993 and 2012).

Blend:  90 to 95% Sémillon, 5 to 10% Muscadelle and Sauvignon

Ageing: in oak barrels from 18 to 26 months depending on the year, 50 to 55% in new barrels

Wine Information

By the end of August, we had been able to see the positive effect of this early and cool year in Sauternes. The rains in mid-September were ideal, falling on a perfectly ripe and healthy crop, thus allowing the Botrytis to take good hold. With the return of dry and cool weather, everything came together perfectly; the successive passes and the concentrations, punctuated by harvesting at historic speed, revealing a vintage with exceptional aromatic intensity.

Written Notes

In the glass, it exhibits a lustrous, deep gold color that hints at its opulence and maturity. The nose is a captivating ensemble of honeyed apricots, candied citrus zest, and nuances of tropical fruits. Aromas evoke a stroll through a sun-soaked orchard. On the palate, this Sauternes wine is a harmonious fusion of sweetness and complexity. Flavors of honeyed stone fruits, pineapple, and hints of vanilla create a sumptuous and indulgent tasting experience. The finish is a grand finale of sweetness, leaving a lasting impression of honeyed nectar and a touch of exotic spices. This is already getting better with a little bit of age!

Pair this extraordinary Sauternes with foie gras, crème brûlée, Roquefort cheese, or a platter of dried fruits and nuts. It is also a splendid companion to moments of celebration and indulgence.

Blended of 83% Sémillon and 17% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2017 Rieussec gives up beautiful notes of orange marmalade, beeswax, acacia honey and yuzu with touches of lemon tart, grapefruit pastilles and musk perfume. The palate is full, rich and unctuous with incredible layers of citrus and honeyed fruits, finishing very long and perfumed. 96-98p
