The Story

Château Trotte Vieille is a 1er (Premier) Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion and Borie-Manoux highest classified and most prestigious Château. Trottevieille is a very old estate. A pergament from the year 1453, kept at the Chateau today, shows that the funny name of Trottevieille had already been used for this estate in the 15th century. In the 14/15th century there apparently lived an elderly lady at the estate. The people from the village of Saint-Emilion called her „the old trott“ most probably due to her funny way of walking down the hill to Saint-Emilion. For this reason, in honour oft he namegivng lady, the second wine of Trottevieille is called „Dame de Trotte Vieille“.

Some of the Cabernet Franc vines here date back to the time before Phylloxera. They are thus the original French Cabernet Franc grape plants and have an age of around 150 years. The roots of these vines have made their way down into the limestone rock, sometimes deeper than 20 metres. Cabernet France often makes the majority of the blend of Trottevielle, making it one of the longest living wines.

Vintage 2015

The 2015 Trottevieille is blend of 49% Merlot, 49% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 28 September and 9 October matured in 100% new oak. It has a very intense bouquet, tightly wound with red and black fruit, hints of truffle coming through with aeration and then it appears to calm down and achieve a wonderful level of definition. The palate is medium-bodied with superb clarity. It feels supple in the mouth, extremely pure and soaking up the new oak with ease. It has a lively orange sorbet and red fruit-driven finish that is silky smooth in texture, thanks to the fineness of the tannin. Cellar this for 5-8 years minimum and then revel in this ascendant Saint Emilion for the next three or four decades. Drink 2022-2050

Score: 94/96 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (224), April 2016

This is phenomenal. Greatest wine from here. Such class and power. It starts off slowly and then goes on for minutes. Full body. Yet racy. The new 1961 Trotte.

Score: 98/99 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, March 2016

Rich ripe fruit the nose has depth of flavour the palate black fruit richness. Sweet quite supple in the middle layers of flavour giving complexity and although there is freshness at the back the finish is rich and sweet. 2022-35

Score: 89/93 Derek Smedley MW, DerekSmedleyMW.co.uk, April 2016

At the riper end of the spectrum, it must be said (the Merlots came in at 15%, apparently) but the high percentage of Cabernet Franc gives the wine balanced, freshness and zip. Leafy, complex and built to last, this is a very impressive Trottevielle. Drink: 2022-35

Score: 94 Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com, April 2016

Quite rich and sweet. Still a bit edgy. Lacks real intensity but it certainly isn’t overdone. Sinewy rather than flattering. Drink 2025-2037

Score: 16.5+ Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2016

Written Notes

Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Excellent nose with intense character, fine aroma reminiscent. Excellent palate with great length and depth, freshness and fine tannins, opulent fruit but remaining in an elegant character.

Deep colour. Inky aniseed, violet aromas with praline, cedar notes. Richly flavoured wine with deep set praline, dark plum fruits, fine chocolaty, al dente textures and excellent mineral length. Quite muscular and tight but will unravel with time. One for the long haul. 97 points
