The Story

Cariad, the Welsh word for “love”, is a Bordeaux-style red wine blended from three outstanding vineyards owned and managed by David Abreu. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc from Madrona Ranch are blended with small amounts of fruit from Thorevilos and Howell Mountain, producing a wine of enormous proportions with a classic structure that is the Colgin hallmark: a plethora of vibrant aromas, voluptuous at mid-palate, with impeccable balance and an exceptionally long finish. A wine as seductive as its name.

Wine Information

This Bordeaux style blend embodies the structure that has become the hallmark of Colgin wines: bright jammy fruit aromas and character combined with soft ripe tannins. The wine is hedonistic in its complexity!

The 2002 Cariad is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot.

Winemaker notes from Mark Aubert:

" Our fourth release of Cariad, Colgin's rendition of a left bank Bordeaux blend, typifies the magical concentration which is omnipresent in all of the Colgin wines. The terroir driven aromatics and tactile textures result in a compelling wine. The vine age of nearly eighteen years contributes to the complexity. The components were all diligently hand sorted and fermented in small lots at Colgin's new, ultra-premium fermentation cellar. The largest component, Cabernet Sauvignon from Madrona Ranch, was kept on the grape skins for nearly two months resulting in a tannin profile that seemed to soften and benefit from the long vatting time.

This is the most deeply colored vintage of Cariad to date. The wine has vibrant clarity and aromatics. Fresh tones of red skinned fruits such as raspberries and black cherries lead to earthy, soil driven notes. The wine is exotic and the often elusive aroma of blood orange oil can be found after the wine opens up over time. The mouth feel is pure richness framed by ripe, supple tannins and fine acid structure. The wine was bottled in April 2004 without fining or filtration and will improve for decades or drink well near term."

We released 500 cases of 2002 Colgin Cariad in November 2005. Release price $225.00.
