This was a difficult wine to assess. It was darker, and seemed slightly tainted, the acid had waned, but the fruit was still attractively present. Then with the gentle Romesco sauce on the Branzino, it rallied, the acid in the sauce providing a lovely flirtation. Underneath the slight taint, you could still just detect on the nose, flowers and nuts. On the palate, some vanilla, gentle oakiness, pears and apples, particularly at the mid palate. You just kept searching for the thrilling acidity so evident in the ’96. The fruit is really pretty, crisp, and nicely layered. Those flowers, nuts and some citrus flounder a bit but rally becomingly on the finish. Still, a lovely wine, though a few points off from what it clearly could be. 92 Points+
