Deep purple black in color. A fine, elegant bouquet. Rich black fruit and dark cherry aromas, with hints of eucalyptus and spice. The palate shows luscious, rich blackberry fruit and a hint of blueberry. A wine with lovely textural quality; velvety smooth. The finish is rich in flavor and wonderfully intense and long.

The Story

Fonseca’s three vineyards—Quinta do Panascal, Quinta de Cruzeiro and Quinta de Santo António—all form the backbone of Fonseca’s Late Bottled Vintage Portos, produced in excellent years when a general vintage is not declared. In the winery, the newly developed, robotic “Port Toes” technology for treading the grapes allows the winery to maximize the quality of the fruit by imitating the traditional action of human feet and avoiding damage to the bitter grape seeds. Fermentation is halted by the addition of grape spirits before all the residual sugar has been fermented, creating a sweet, fortified wine. The wine is then matured in neutral oak and bottled without filtration to allow further evolution in the bottle

Wine Information

The winter preceding the 2011 harvest was wetter and colder than the 30-year average. Budburst occurred as usual in mid-March and warm weather and rainfall in April produced vigorous growth. At the beginning of May dry conditions set in and there was little rainfall in eastern areas of the Douro until late August. However, the vines were able to draw from the plentiful ground water reserves built up during the previous winter and bunches developed and ripened in ideal conditions. Véraison occurred a little earlier than usual, on June 15th. Mild weather in June and July was broken only by a heat wave in the second half of June. August was hot and dry, with perfectly timed rainfall on August 21st and September 1st rounding off an excellent ripening season and producing a well-balanced crop.

Vintage 2011

2011 Vintage Port Declaration: All of the major port houses have now declared the 2011 vintage as being of exceptional quality. For many shippers this is the first declaration since 2007. The avalanche of declarations started with Sogrape, owners of Sandeman and Ferriera. This has been followed by Symington, the company that owns Dows, Graham Warre and Cockburn and Taylor Fladgate owners of the Fonseca and Taylors brands

Inside Information

An excellent pairing with full-flavored cheeses, especially blue cheeses, and with dark chocolate or fresh berry desserts. This wine is unfiltered and should be decanted because of sediment in the bottle.
