The Story

THE CREATION

The best batches are carefully selected, vinified and aged separately. Only some ten crus deserve this special treatment: the very best villages of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Among them we find a predominance of Pinot Noir (64%) which marks the House’s style. Time is needed to reveal the fullness of Nature’s bounty. Ageing on the lees is patiently continued for five years. When the wine is judged to be ready, the dosage with a very low sugar content of 6g/l brings it out without altering it. For all these reasons G.H.MUMM Millésimé is a wine for laying down, that can be kept in a cellar for some ten years.

WINE TALK: OVER TO THE CELLAR MASTER

"The nose reveals the fine and rich complexity of this wine, starting with notes of apple and pear as well as yellow fruits such as apricot or plum, followed later by the aromas of dried fruits and nuts with some notes of pastry. After a strong attack the finish is well-defined and long."

Wine Information

A fine history ... of a great year
For the Cellar Master as for the entire team of the House, the birth of a great vintage is both a joy and a responsibility. Every vintage wine reflects the House style whilst expressing the distinctiveness of an exceptional year.

Vintage 2004

A great example of how large yields do not necessarily mean poor quality in Champagne. As a reaction to the previous year's low yields, the vines produced one of the largest crops on record. The growing season proceeded without major difficulties but the bumper crop called for bud thinning. August brought about cooler weather and some rains, increasing the risk of rot. The massive crop, averaging 13,990 kg/ha, was picked from September 18th onwards. The quality was a pleasant surprise; vibrant wines with appropriate intensity, refined charm and refreshing lightness. This vintage impresses me more and more, and I feel tempted to give it the full five stars. It comes with a rare balance of freshness, lightness, yet fine aromatic intensity. Post-release, this vintage has proven to be slow to age, and elegant wines are likely to keep on ageing gracefully. Dom Pérignon and Louis Roederer Cristal both excelled.
