The Story

Monfortino is the very first Barolo made in what has come to be known as the classic style. Earlier Barolos were generally sold in either cask or demijohn, and meant for early drinking. Giacomo decided to create a Barolo with great aging potential. His first wine wine was a 120 Barolo Riserva, and he soon adopted the name Monfortino in honor of his home village Montorte d'Alba.
In 1959 Giovanni Conterno began making the wine at his family domaine, taking over from his father Giacomo. The legendary Barolos he made in 1964, 1971, 1978, 1985 and 1990 have left their mark in Italian wine history.

Barolo Riserva Monfortino – Giacomo Conterno

The family-led “Conterno Giacomo” wine company has been working in the ambit of wine-making for ages, since 1770, as shown by a delivery bill, which traces back to that year. It is a passion which has always been passed on from fathers to sons.
Nowadays, all the grapes used for wine-making come from "Cascina Francia" vineyard, a small estate on a single plot located in Serralunga d'Alba countryside.

At present, their production focuses exclusively on two grapes typologies: Nebbiolo-da-Barolo and Barbera. All of their wines are made in full respect of the traditional method.
Only for very good vintages, the selection of the best Nebbiolo-da-Barolo grapes are kept apart to produce "Barolo Riserva Monfortino". This wine variety undergoes a different fermentation (not temperature controlled and the maceration is longer) and a longer aging in classic Slavonian large oak barrels.
After wine-making, the wines so produced are decanted into oak large barrels, where they rest before bottling. The aging for Monfortino is minimum 7 years.

Today Giovanni's son Roberto continues the traditions of his father and grandfather.
The company takes the greatest care of both the winery and “Cascina Francia” vineyard, because without this lovely accuracy it isn’t possible to get good wines at all!

Written Notes

A flight of Monfortino started with a corked 1990 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva (DQ).  Today’s session was a bit more unlucky than usual, I thought to myself.  The next two made up for it, beginning with a delicious 1964 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva.  This wine was ready and there, with a nice leather finish and excellent caramel with a dry, salty toffee edge.  This was classic and on its plateau, and much better than the last bottle I had of this (95).

Bottle was in excellent condition with top-shoulder level. Decanted one hour. Scenic nose: delicate, eerie notes of cedar and chocolate, earth and game, with wild violet notes and a subtle black fruit core. Fabulous sweetness of fruit on the palate with super-ripe cassis, spices, coffee, and mushrooms. Lots of energy. Complex and multi-layered wine with a great balance and pure, vigorous ending. A wonderful wine drinking perfectly now, and one of our greatest Barolo experiences.

Mushrooms, cherries, soil, tar, roses, sweet spice, all swirl on the enrapturing bouquet. This is a remarkable example of the vintage and the genre. You get notes of gentle red curry almost and notes of balsamic on the palate. You can almost “taste” the Monfortino soil here, and the sweet, spiced red fruit blazes forth at and past the mid palate. There is such a pervading, rounded, luscious, sensuous balance to the wine, enough acidic tang, an impressive now secondary tannic structure, just a touch almost of BBQ wood smoke as it gathers itself for a black cherry “kissed”, soft and palate seducing finish. 99 Points+

"was no slouch, either. The nose was nice with a 'touch of barnyard,' someone noticed. It was rich, round and long with excellent mouthfeel and structure. Gritty, sandy, dusty and more gritty, the wine was on the leathery and earthy side with complements of mushroom and forest floor "
