The Story

Monfortino is the very first Barolo made in what has come to be known as the classic style. Earlier Barolos were generally sold in either cask or demijohn, and meant for early drinking. Giacomo decided to create a Barolo with great aging potential. His first wine wine was a 120 Barolo Riserva, and he soon adopted the name Monfortino in honor of his home village Montorte d'Alba.
In 1959 Giovanni Conterno began making the wine at his family domaine, taking over from his father Giacomo. The legendary Barolos he made in 1964, 1971, 1978, 1985 and 1990 have left their mark in Italian wine history.

Written Notes

had very dry tannins in its chocolaty and earthy nose, more mature than youthful. It seemed to be on a faster maturity curve than most of the other vintages. The wine was very spicy in an earthy way with sandpaper flavors. Ray was surprised by the 1982 and found it to be one of the better ones that he has ever had

This was a brilliant demonstration of Monfortino’s gifts. Black cherries, chocolate, roses and herbs abound on the utterly enticing nose. It opens with such elegance, the fruit is somewhat more introverted, but attractively so. There is such appealing sweetness and mouth perfume, and the nuanced depth of flavors are blossoming so attractively at and past the mid palate. There is such freshness, a touch of anise, relenting tannins, and on the finish a sense of the graceful monumentality that is only now starting to fully reveal its facets. Less hedonistically bewitching than the ’85, this is a gorgeous wine still some years from its apogee. 96 Points++

Giacomo Conterno Monfortino Barolo Riserva 1982 Magnum Cloudy, deep ruby red with bricking rim and dark red core. Open, perfumed, developed and very intense nose that is utterly complex with a backdrop of wild, dark forest fruit all covered in the most daunting, earthy notes of truffle, smoke, mushrooms, licorice, spices, black pepper and dried flowers. Killer nose that just ads layer after layer after layer. Intoxicating! Full throttle palate with a core of youthful dark fruit that fans out like a peacocks tail with complex flavors and fills your head with violets, truffles, licorice, mushrooms, spices and dried flowers. The big but silky tannins keeps your palate in a perfect grip that transitions into a superbly long and perfumed finish which ads mineral notes, smoke, blood and flowers. Impeccable balance, and harmony. Even though it's developed and drinking fantastic today it will definitely keep for very long. I take a deep bow to Monfortino. Drink now-2023 98p
