The Story

Monfortino is the very first Barolo made in what has come to be known as the classic style. Earlier Barolos were generally sold in either cask or demijohn, and meant for early drinking. Giacomo decided to create a Barolo with great aging potential. His first wine wine was a 120 Barolo Riserva, and he soon adopted the name Monfortino in honor of his home village Montorte d'Alba.
In 1959 Giovanni Conterno began making the wine at his family domaine, taking over from his father Giacomo. The legendary Barolos he made in 1964, 1971, 1978, 1985 and 1990 have left their mark in Italian wine history.

Written Notes

was a knockout, gorgeous wine. It was lighter up front at first but the tastiest wine of the flight by far with its smooth cherry fruit. The tannins really came out in the glass, and the wine was classic and great. 'The most complete today,' Roberto remarked

A sheer masterpiece of the genre, cassis and espresso dueling with brio on the bouquet. Waves of dark fruit lap on the palate, exquisite delineation, a seductive sweetness emerges at the mid palate, beautiful acidity, truffles and plums next, so well integrated, emphatic and yet supremely elegant. Poignant, multi-layered, complex, awash in appeal. 97 Points

This was spellbindingly beautiful. You have cherries, mineral notes and cedar on the nose. But as it hits your palate, there is almost a joyous outburst of sweet, spiced, dark and red fruit. You then get cassis and espresso at the mid palate, before the lyrical sweet tinged fruit flares forth again, at times slightly undercut, though quite becomingly, by the acid in the Cacciatore sauce. You then have truffles, plums, secondary nuance galore despite the early blandishments of critics seeking different enticements. The sheer magisteria of flavors coalescing on the finish, with its brilliant, vivid, vivacious length, all girded by such charmingly bright acidity, and perfumed succulent fruit, leaves you cheering with joy. 97 Points+

"D 4 h / G 2.5 h
Moderately intense, brick red colour. Medium-intense nose with spirity, varnish, toasty, and very smokey aromas. The palate is pointed out by intense flavours of red fruits, refined tannins, upfront taste with medium-bodied palate and vivid acidity. Dry elegant finish, very classic aftertaste with concentrated, chocolatey aftertaste with very firm tannins. Peaking now. Drink up!
