The Story

Since 1808, Champagne Henriot, one of the last independent and family-owned houses in Champagne, has pursued a tradition of excellence – a fragile balance between delicacy, intensity, and purity. For seven generations, the family has selected only the very best vineyards, concentrated on the purity of chardonnay and has upheld the utmost respect for time in order to ensure the cuvee has an opportunity to reach its full expression.

The choices made in blending perpetuate the house style: chardonnay reigns in proportion (fifty to sixty percent). It brings finesse, elegance, richness and freshness. Pinot noir gives essential structure. Pinot meunier contributes fruit complexity. Non vintage wines may contain as many as fifty different crus in precisely orchestrated balance, with roughly twenty percent reserve wines. It is again Champagne Henriot’s task to impart a distinct personality to its wines. These wines, which may be a decade in age and are tasted at least every three months, comprise the house’s library, guaranteeing the perpetuity of its style.

Vintage 1995

A welcome relief after some difficult years in the region. Quantity-wise, it was the seventh high-cropping year in a row. But, in 1995, the quality also excelled, and particularly so for Chardonnay. There were significant frost damages during the spring and the warm but wet weather in the summer ignited mildew and rot problems. The vines cropped heavily and rigorous vineyard work and selection during harvest led to best results. Harvest commenced on September 18th and yielded grapes of a fine balance of sugar and acidity. The vintage has turned out to be much better than first expected and it has emerged from the shadow of the much-hyped 1996. This vintage is marked by elegance of its inviting fruitiness, beautiful balance and slow-building finesse. Its greatest examples include Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires, Dom Pérignon (whole range), Louis Roederer Cristal and Cristal Rosé, Bollinger R.D, Krug Vintage and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne.

Written Notes

I like this classic Champagne very much. Certainly the wine is, from start to finish, a touch too discreet, but this textbook concoction possesses a rarely seen elegance among blended Champagnes. The Champagne exhibits a sophisticated depth of autolytic aromas and a crystal-clear, lemony-fresh, Chardonnay palate. Handsome and distinguished, like a lighter version of the great vintages from Veuve Clicquot.

Henriot Millésimé 1995 Magnum Bit closed and youthful nose with apples, lemon, lemon skins, toasty notes, nuts and minerality. Nice nose but pretty basic. Medium bodied with a fruity attack of apples and citrus that turns into a more toasty finish. The mid-palate lacks a bit of concentration and the acidity feels uncomfortably hard. I've never been a huge fan of the 95s from Henriot and this time was no different. Drink now-2020 87p
