Wine Spectator, Score: 97/100

“This is all about balance and the integration of power and finesse, with finely honed acidity supporting flavors of quince paste, dried black cherry, spun honey and candied orange zest, while rich notes of roasted walnut, coffee liqueur and toasted cardamom resonate on the finish. Hard to stop sipping. Drink now through 2028. ”–AN

The Story

Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug’s philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: A blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may reach 15 years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Krug Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance - something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée: the first prestige cuvee re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage.

NV (10's)

As you taste it, notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar and jellied fruits may take you by surprise. You may even taste hints of apples still on the tree, flowers in bloom, ripe and dried fruit, almonds, marzipan, gingerbread, sweet spices and even brioche and honey. You may also notice its exceptional freshness in the mouth, with rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit enhanced by the subtlety of its fine and elegant bubbles. Krug Grande Cuvée can age beautifully.

Written Notes

This was the perfect accompaniment to the wonderful hors d’oeuvres. Great freshness combined with intense citrus and ripe gamey, savoury and honeyed notes. Powerful but very delicate and layered. Really lovely. 94/100

The Grand Cuvee, according to Nicole and Aldo, is the hardest wine to make amongst the lineup because of consistency; that is, to create a wine that maintains the same profile regardless of vintage and vineyards. To do that, the tasting panel tastes 250 base wines over a long period and compiles 4000 tasting notes as a result. The panel then tastes 150 reserve wines (base wines made from past years) before Eric Lebel, the Chef de Caves, proposes 5 blends as candidates for production under the Grand Cuvee label. As a result of this arduous process and aging in the cellar, this champagne pours a deep golden color with pin-sized bubbles and thick long legs. On the nose are copious amounts of lemon custard, apricots, hazelnut oils, honey, leather, brioche, smoky hay and citrus. The palate is generous with a restrained character in both taste and effervescence. Notes of brioche, almonds, white peaches, Meyer lemons, brie, honey and mint dominate the core. Minerality is all the more present too. The finish is very long with a clear cut as the acidity levels maintain the balance. A very masculine wine, and one that is definitely age-worthy. This is even better than the last time I tried it. 94

GRANDE CUVEE. 163rd Edition: Disgorged winter 2014-15. (Based on 2007; plus about 40% of reserve wines. 35 other wines dating back to 1999) ID: 115003. 183 wines from 12 different 12. Finesse driven rich and highly complex nose. Yellow apple, vanilla, Patisserie, peach, very feminine and yet deep and serious. Superb complexity on palate with the same amazing combination of intensity and elegance on palate. Soft mousse and very vinous. Very Krug. Beautiful play of density and acidity in the finish. Candied, caramelized notes and ripe yellow fruit. Great blend of the 183 “elements”. (plots, batches) 92+p

Nov 2012
Antonio Galloni 91 Drink: 2013 - 2020 $118-$442 (169)
The NV Brut Grande Cuvee emerges from the glass with freshly cut flowers, almonds, pastry and spices. This is a relatively floral, bright Grande Cuvee with fewer of the oxidative qualities that are typical of the house style. According to Krug's ID Code, this bottle is based on the 2004 vintage, which explains the wine's tense, taut personality. Another year or two on the cork will only help the wine gain expressiveness and depth. Today, the Grande Cuvee is quite reticent and not showing the full breadth of its personality. This bottle carries ID Code: 211024. Disgorged: Summer 2011.Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.

There are no new vintage wines from Krug, but is always interesting to revisit these wines as they develop so much over time. The biggest news at Krug is the addition of ID Codes to the NV wines, which gives readers the opportunity to get more information on the wines (including disgorgement dates) through Krug's website. It would be great to see more of the larger houses follow suit.

"Latest release. Pale lemon yellow, tiny bubbles. Fruity, minerals, brioche, lemons, apples, some nuts far back, layered nose. Fresh acidity, elegant mousse, fresh and detailed, some tropical notes but more focused than it seems to have been for the last year or two, silky and smooth, detailed, layered and long. "
