Before the harvest, a hailstorm devastated a large part of the village. Situated in its heart, Krug’s Clos du Mesnil resisted better than the other plots, as its vines are protected by the surrounding walls and village. Delicious, generous, ripe grapes survived the storm to provide an opulent and infinitely elegant Chardonnay.

The House of Krug chose to create Krug Clos du Mesnil 2000 because the indulgence of the year 2000 succeeded in fully expressing the potential of the walled single plot of Krug’s Clos du Mesnil.  It reveals a precise signature and a striking grace, after resting in the cellar for over ten years.

The Story

Krug Clos du Mesnil, a very rare Champagne, showcases the unique character of a single plot of Chardonnay, harvested in a single year. Our 1.84-hectare vineyard overlooked by the village church has been protected by walls since 1698. The vineyard is located in the heart of Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most iconic villages for Chardonnay in the Champagne region. Krug Clos du Mesnil has an expansive generous personality enhanced by the finish which powers through with extreme precision.

The vineyard was secretly replanted over eight years, and it was not until 1979 that the first harvest was deemed to fulfil expectations. When the wine was tasted, it proved so outstanding that the Krugs decided to bottle it on its own. There would be no "assemblage” – a bold decision amply justified by the exquisite quality of the single ingredient.

Vintage 2000

A warm and wet winter was followed by an equally wet spring. First, in May, came the seri- ous heat, which gave a fast owering around June 14. Chlorosis and mold growth were evi- dent. June and August were hot and dry. But if you were like me, and tried to have a July vaca- tion in Champagne that year, you noticed how cold and rainy it was. The weather was almost as bad as at home, with constant rain and local hailstorms.

Everything looked hopeless, but the good weather during harvest saved a decent amount of fresh grapes. Harvest started on my birthday—September 11—and ended in early October. Chardonnay and pinot meunier did better than the delicate pinot noir. The year will become sought after thanks to their magic number. The quality does not look too fancy yet though. The wines are quite light with short lives. However, it is a very enjoyable moment, with its intense exotic aromas of passion fruit and tangerine. I am delighted to recommend some romantic bottles of the successful pink trio William Deutz Rosé, Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé, and Pommery Cuvée Louise Rosé.

Written Notes

Prerelease!  Not at all a Clos du Mesnil stylistically in the early stages. Very charming and alluring tropical passion fruit, lollies and sugary soft tones, but the spring of 2012 it had been transformed into classical incomparable beauty from my favorite winery in the world. The elegance is amazing and brilliant. The buttery, slightly fudge scented Montrachet layer dances beautifully with stunning citrus acidity and a thousand tiny bright sounds from paradise.’ RJ 97(98)

There was no heatwave in 2000 but overall the summer was quite warm. This will be the next Clos du Mesnil to be released, but actually I found it a little more generous on the palate than the 1998, even if less developed on the nose. More discreet nose but impressively introvert. Broad on the palate but still very dry on the finish. Austere at the moment but very promising.

“This wine has been on a consistent rise ever since its launch. It has taken some time for the reserved tightness to vanish but now the wine is already showing plenty of what is to come. It impresses from the first sniff onwards until its super long and intense ending. There is a searing acid line beneath ripe fruity opulence leading to a dry mineral finish. The oaky notes are now perfectly harmonized to the generous, honey and fudge toned fruitness. The wine comes together so beautifully at the end. Still holding back plenty so hold on to the bottles you have. A grand Clos du Mesnil.”

Inside Information

I have had the opportunity to try this vintage 3 times since it was released but this is the first time in large format (see the database for the reviews from 750 ml). As is often the case in magnum there is just another level of depth and freshness as the expressive, cool and restrained nose displays only a trace of secondary character to the yeasty aromas of brioche, white orchard fruit and citrus peel nuances. There is a gorgeously clean and highly sophisticated mouth feel to the middle weight flavors that are supported by an ultra-fine if notably firm mousse, all wrapped in a markedly dry but not really austere finish that possesses excellent lift that contributes to that beguiling feeling of being impatient for the next sip. Unlike this wine from 750 ml, in magnum format this is nowhere near ready and this knockout will require plenty of patience, indeed it wouldn’t surprise me if my 2025+ suggested drinking window proves to be overly optimistic. In sum, this is a wine of such harmony and balance that it really sticks in your memory as having provided one of those rare ‘wow’ experiences! Drink 2025+.
