The Story

To the delight of Krug Lovers around the world, a very limited number of Krug Vintage bottles are kept in ideal conditions in the House’s cellars. They are tasted and appraised as they wait to blossom into a second life. The Cellar Master might then decide that some Krug Vintages reveal a new personality and become Krug Collection. Krug Collection is a tribute to time sublimation: maturity exposes hidden facets, depth and new flavours, while gaining structure and complexity. Krug Collection is always a wonderful discovery, a deeper story of the Krug Vintage.

Wine Information

The world’s best wine vintage – 1947?

If the wine producers from different regions were asked to name the best vintages from their winemaking history, the most would name 1947 as one of the great ones. If we then compared them together there would be most likely only one vintage that the most if not every producer had named on list – 1947.

The vintage 1947 was a magical vintage. It remains in the history as one of the only vintages that all well-established quality wine regions in the world were blessed with superb weather conditions. The heat waves  were experienced all around the world and for instance the whole Europe was bating under scorching sun and experiencing a heat wave  during the summer. This resulted very concentrated and highly ripe grapes. The producers had challenges to handle the very ripe grapes with high sugar levels as there was a constant risk of bacterial contamination in less hygienic cellars that had no artificial cooling systems. As there was no technology to use, many invoked on huge blocks of ice to cool the room temperature down and even putting ice in their fermentation tanks.

This vintage has proven to yield very long lasting wines from all around the world. The wines are marked with sweet and ripe fruit character and warming alcohol. Due to the poorly hygenic winemaking facilities, many of the wines show volatile characters. Some might find this as a fault, but for many mature wine lovers this feature is even a preferred character. However, when buying the wines from this vintage, one should be aware that there is high level of bottle variations and the risk of having highly volatile wines is remarkably high.

In Champagne, the vintage was outstanding. The heat wave lead to very early harvest. The yields were however smaller than on average year.

Written Notes

Big Boy immediately said to wait on this superlative 1947 Krug Collection.  As the ’61 took the ’76 to another level of richness, so did the ’47 to the ’61!  While more mature brown sugar kisses, the 1947 was by no means too mature.  There was an incredible smokiness here in this great flavor profile.  There was a unique nuttiness and smokiness to go with the most savory and complex of these three heroes (99).

Oh yes! So this is how great it is! One of the most impressive champagnes I have come across. A perfect bottle overflowing with the rich, exotic lustre of golden fruits and spices from the Far East. Has a place in the team of most people's dreams!

Good looking normal size bottle, is in a good condition and level is 4cm ullage below the cork. Colour is gold, and looking bright and deep. On the nose it is intense, mature, opulent and generous. The taste is perfumed, focused, full-bodied, with complex, good texture and balanced structure. On the palate it is layered and has dried-fruit, truffles, vanilla, tropical fruits, toasty, smoky, mineral and chocolate flavours. The finish is long, extensive, flavorful and vibrant. This wine is wonderful and impressive. I paid around 3k-5k€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 5-10€ years and decant at least 15min before tasting.
