Written Notes

This is an odd, but oddly appealing wine. I was immediately drawn by the nose, and had a hard time identifying it as what it is (varietal malbec). There are so many disjointed aromas - almost fighting with each other. The same follows on the tongue. I don't generally see varietal Malbec as a wine to be aged long, but I am anxious to see if all these wonderful flavors and aromas ever meld together into a harmonious unit. Thankfully, my friend Peter gifted a bottle to me at the end of this tasting, so that I can revisit it in a few years & see how it has evolved. Nose: Leather, tar, tobacco, deep plus & dark cherry fruit. Very ripe, but not to the point of distraction. Palate: Very rich. Perhaps a touch sweet (again, very ripe). All of the disjointed aromas follow onto the tongue, but again, not quite blending together harmoniously (yet). Very BIG, with a drying tannic finish (but with fruit showing through the tannins. The verdict? The jury is still out on this one, but I find it intriguing enough to give it a fairly high score, just because it makes me keep wondering & thinking about it...that's a high quality in any wine...and because I think there's a chance this will all come together. I hope I don't open my one bottle too soon (or too late)!
