Wine Information

In the spring, I announced that the vegetation would get off to a late start, and the cool temperatures caused a long, drawn-out and irregular flowering period. From mid-June onwards, and for two months, it was fine and dry, the sort of weather that vines love. The viticultural season was easy: there was no mildew, the weeds were kept under control to avoid too much competition with the vines and just a little work with the mattock was necessary! As usual, oidium appeared insidiously at the end of July, but we were ready and waiting for it and there was little damage.

On August 15th and 16th, it rained nonstop and the soil soaked up all the water: just over 3 inches in Vertus, nearly 4 inches in Cramant. This rain, apparently welcome, provided us with a few surprises. Right up until the harvest, the rainy periods followed one another, accompanied by a damp westerly wind. Botrytis reared its ugly head, especially in the Pinots; the Chardonnays in the early-ripening vineyards began to rot.

We decided to harvest quickly. The first two days were difficult. We sorted the Pinot Noir intensely, both in the vineyard and on the sorting table, and lost half of the crop. There won’t be much Rosé de Saignée this year.

Then came the miracle. The weather turned cold and fine, and the situation stabilised: the other 9 days of harvesting were carried out in the sun, with ideal conditions for picking. Our harvesters were happy and so were we.

The grands crus from Cramant and especially Avize were magnificent. We had a good degree of maturity, fine balance and hardly any rot. In the end, the vintage promises to be quite good, particularly for the white wines.

To sum up, we will not produce as much rosé, the grands crus from Cramant and especially Avize were magnificent, with a good degree of and hardly any rot. In the end, things look quite promising for the whites.
