The Story

Cristal Rosé was first born a hundred years after the original Cristal, in 1974. It is an intriguing and particular prestige cuvée rosé, as it has the palest colour, yet a contrastingly fleshy, fruity, well-built palate of amazing freshness. Its secret is in the 60 per cent Pinot Noir from two hectares of Roederer’s own old-vine vineyards in Aÿ, Bonotte-Pierre-Robert and La Côte du Moulin, which are now cultivated according to biodynamic principles. It is these ripe, concentrated grapes that give the wine its delicate hue via the saignée, or bleeding method. Then 30 per cent of Côte des Blancs Grand Cru Chardonnay from Le Mesnil sur Oger and Avize is added to give spine and elegance.

Vintage 1989

Champagne: A warm vintage, where simply charming wines were produced. However, there was not enough heat throughout the year. Spring frosts killed some of the shoots, reducing the harvest by 20%. The inflorescences were discontinued due to the exceptionally cold weather. This was followed by the maturation of the grapes in two phases. The first harvest was already made at the beginning of September and the second at the beginning of October. Overall, the result was a great harvest of good wines. The vintage has been compared to what others believe to be the legendary hot vintages of the century – 1947, 1959 and 1976. The wines are marked by rich essence, heavy taste, tropical fruitiness and softer acids. The vintage matures noticeably faster than 1988 and 1990, reaching its peak in the following 3 to 5 years.

Somewhat less elegant than the '88, but with a sparklingly colorful knockout fruit and generous softness. Without doubt one of this vintage's absolutely foremost Champagnes.

The 1989 Cristal Rose with which it was paired was a bit oxidative in the nose. There were aromas of faded strawberry and a hint of wet wool. The palate was very citrusy and metally without being metallic, something Todd picked up on as well, also calling it ‘salty.’ There were tangy red fruit flavors on its gamy palate; Big Boy called it ‘stewy,’ and it was clear that it was oxidized. I could have still drunk it and probably would have on another night, but with the punches rolling, we let it go (91A).

Finally perfect bottle! Light pale partridge eye colour. Intense nose, dominates red currants and flowery tones. Gentle spiciness and touch of foie grass. Very balanced and together with very ripe peaches and even some ripe cherries. Ripe and smooth in the mouth. Quite low acidity- very obvious hot vintage. Great concentration and length. Red and white fruits intermixed with light spiciness. massive concentration. Beautiful to enjoy today, but would be kept for another 25 years. Great wine! 96
