The Story

Cristal Rosé was first born a hundred years after the original Cristal, in 1974. It is an intriguing and particular prestige cuvée rosé, as it has the palest colour, yet a contrastingly fleshy, fruity, well-built palate of amazing freshness. Its secret is in the 60 per cent Pinot Noir from two hectares of Roederer’s own old-vine vineyards in Aÿ, Bonotte-Pierre-Robert and La Côte du Moulin, which are now cultivated according to biodynamic principles. It is these ripe, concentrated grapes that give the wine its delicate hue via the saignée, or bleeding method. Then 30 per cent of Côte des Blancs Grand Cru Chardonnay from Le Mesnil sur Oger and Avize is added to give spine and elegance.

Written Notes

Exceptional beauty and perfection combined in a wonderful way where that which is perfect is never sexless. My winner when the 10 most eminent Cuvée Prestige Rosés on the market were lined up blind in front of my nose. I did in fact get them all right but it took a long time before I had found them all. However it only took a second to find this beautiful Cristal. One of the most superior wines in the world!

It is always fun to taste Cristal versus Cristal Rose, especially when 1996. The last time I did this side by side, it was a real horse race, but now the Rose has pulled ahead. The 1996 Louis Roederer Cristal Rose was another sizzler, rock solid from first smell to its finish. There was so much strawberry goodness, and it didn’t suffer from being overly dry as many young Roses can. Its acidity sparkled (97).
