63% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, 22% of the wine vinified in oak casks, 13% malolactic fermentation.

For its Rosé champagnes, Louis Roederer combines the two methods used in the region, maceration and blending. A little Chardonnay juice poured into a Pinot noir maceration and fermented together to achieve the perfect harmony. The wine is aged for 4 years in the cellars and left for a minimum of 6 months after disgorging to attain the perfect maturity. The dosage is 9 g/l.

The Story

In order for grapes to be used in the creation of a great rosé champagne, they have to attain perfect maturity, which is sometimes difficult to achieve in the changeable Champagne climate. This is why Louis Roederer decided to invest in the vineyards at Cumières, where the shallow calcareous clay soil, which is on south-facing slopes bathed in the light reflected from the banks of the river Marne, enables the grapes to attain optimum phenolic maturity.

A blend of around 65% Pinot noir and 35% Chardonnay, 20% of which is wine matured in oak tuns, the Rosé Vintage cuvée is generally matured on lees for 4 years and left for a minimum of 6 months after dégorgement (disgorging) to attain perfect maturity.

The wine has fruity aromas of wild red berries, followed by floral notes, and the sugary and spicy fragrance of zest; and the aromas of dried fruit and cocoa result from the wine’s vinifying in oak tuns. Rich and full-bodied, the Rosé Vintage exalts the maturity of the fruit. A sparkling wine with an initial impression of freshness, it opens smoothly with almost exotic notes, combined with the pure minerality of the Chardonnay grapes.

Wine Information

This cool and damp year unexpectedly generated the earliest harvest in the history of our House. A vintage of inverted seasons: a rather mild and dry winter developed into a summer-style climate for the entire spring. Summer began extremely cool and wet, with autumnal conditions continuing until the end of August. The weather improved at the end of the month with a return to summer temperatures by late August and throughout the month of September. The ripening process was spectacularly - and unexpectedly - energetic for such mediocre weather conditions. 2011 was a vintage of patience and careful selection during the picking. Similarly to 2010, only a few south-facing plots and vines with very few grapes reached satisfactory ripeness.

Vintage 2011

Champagne Vintage 2011  / Pinot noir especially stood out this year, while pinot meunier was a ected partly by attacks. The winter came unusually early, in November of the previous year, but a mild late spring still led to a owering in May. The blending wines still have a fairly thin structure and a disturbing tone of bubblegum. Actually, this was one of the few autumns I have been present at harvest. I went around and made unannounced visits here and there. The strongest impression and question mark was actually the huge amount of invasive ladybugs that were caught in the presses and left a nasty, urine-saturated stabbing scent in the press houses. Will this leave an impression? I fail to see it disappear given how strong it was. Apart from that, I will never forget it was 86°F and the autumn sun radiant, when we celebrated with a magnum and reworks into the wee hours in Moulin de Verzenay.

Written Notes

Delicate peach hued colour. The subdued, pure fruity nose has fresh peaches, light pastyr and toasty nose alongside perky orange blossom notes. Fresh, light feeling palate with accentuated, driven acidity making the fruit shine. Medium-long, pure fruity finish.

Light and golden pink colour with subtle tie-dye tones.Fine and delicate bubbles.

A very delicate and fleeting bouquet combining red fruits (raspberry liqueur), chocolate notes (cocoa) and a few notes of dried flowers. All the promise of a noble bouquet.

The immediate effect on the palate is a concentration of red fruits, flowers and blood orange. The sensation is deliciously rich, concentrated and elegant thanks to the tangy freshness that prolongs the taste. Then follow the classic sensations of tangy citrus fruit, such as yuzu.

The challenge of the 2011 Rosé, a difficult vintage for ripeness in Champagne, is perfectly met thanks to the Pinots noirs from south-facing Cumières, and the small yields which helped these grapes reach perfect ripeness.
