The Story

G.A.M. represents the first initial of each of the Mitolo children's first names - Gemma, Alex and Marco. The G.A.M. Shiraz comes from the Chinese Block within the Lopresti Vineyard, located all the way at the southern tip of McLaren Vale and on the coast. The vineyard soil types are heavy grey loam over sandstone soils, with black cracking Biscay clays intermixed. These soils have excellent water-holding capacity and require minimal irrigation. Being so close to the coast the vines experience warm summer days that contribute to fruit intensity and excellent tannin ripeness, and cooling afternoon sea breezes and nights maintain good acid levels in the grapes, allowing extended maturation on the vine and resulting in complexity of the flavor profile.  Yields are typically around 2.3 tons an acre (40 hl/ha) from vines with an average age of 25 years old.

Written Notes

Named after owner, Frank Mitolo's three children, Gemma, Alexander and Marco, this wine comes from the 'Chinese Block'. Mitolo is surely amongst the very finest wineries in McLaren Vale and a testament to the winemaking skills of Ben Glaetzer. Black fruits here, some toasty oak. Rich and ripe. There is chocolate, backed by a little warm earthy notes and some underlying minerality. Full-flavoured. It is a big, rich chocolatey, McLaren Vale style. One could even consider it perhaps a bit of a bruiser. Good acidity, firm tannins, but all is balanced. This is undoubtedly a big, full whack of a wine. Fits the bill for those looking for something to open with their next woolly mammoth steak. Some will argue that we should move away from wines like this to the lighter, elegant end of the spectrum and there is something in that but surely, when you have a terrific wine, full of flavour and well balanced, it deserves the recognition There must be room for all sorts?
