The Story

Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage champagnes, unlike most champagnes, are made from the grapes of a single exceptional year. Each Grand Vintage is unique. Each possesses the distinctive, imitable qualities of that year’s outstanding grapes, qualities which have been elevated to their fullest expression through the savoir-faire, experience and expertise of Moët & Chandon and the House’s chef de cave.
Since 1842, the House has released 69 vintage champagnes. Moët & Chandon possesses one of the world’s most prestigious collection of vintage champagnes, all of which are safeguarded in the Grand Vintage Reserve cellars.

Vintage 1928

Champagne Vintage by Richard Juhlin / The vintage of the century! Krug from this year is considered by many experts to be the most perfect champagne ever made. More than eighty years old, champagne is always a gamble, and I regret to inform you that I am no longer equally impressed with this powerful vintage as I was earlier. Certainly, there are great bottles— and the acidity is always impressive—but most are pitted by maderisation, unlike the delicious 1921. The major exception is, of course, my best champagne experience—the light and magical 1928 Pol Roger Grauves.

Written Notes

A duo of Champagne took us to the afternoon dinner table, and it was quite the duo being from 1928.  The 1928 Moet was smoky and toasty, full and rich.  While it lost most of its bubbles, there was still a delicious persona with lots of vanilla cream.  It was rich and fleshy with burnt sugar and great caramel flavors on its finish.  Despite no bubbles, it was still so creamy with great oil and honey flavors (95).
