The Story

Our Chardonnay is a top quality wine with great character traits. The wine originates from a mini-plot on the best slope and is produced only in very small amounts. The absolute attention to detail and meticulous screening and selection make this Chardonnay extremely distinctive. Proximity to the sea and the cool nights lend this wine its uniqueness and a suggestion of finesse worthy of a Burgundy.

Monteverro Chardonnay is bursting with sweet aromas of pear, honey, vanilla, apricot, and white chocolate. It is balanced by mild notes of white truffles and roasted nuts. The first sips are fresh revealing enticing stone fruit and citrus flavors of white peach and blood orange; the wine quickly evolves to showcase a complex white with excellent minerality and a lingering finish with hints of candied orange peel and marzipan. The wine undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation on fine lees and is then aged in 30% new French oak barrels and 70% egg-shaped concrete tanks for 14 months.

Wine Information

2011 began with a very rainy winter which filled up the water reserve before the beginning of the season. The spring was warmer than average and budbreak and flowering were about a week earlier than in 2010. These conditions had a very positive impact on the quality of the vintage as it resulted in a very even grape development. Summer was a bit cooler and two rains of 25 mm (July 5 and July 27) helped the veraison and the beginning of the maturation continue without water stress. The end of the ripening was accelerated by a hot August, and we harvested the Chardonnay from August 17-23, before the heat wave in order to protect its natural acidity.

Written Notes

Deep yellow gold with hints of straw, the wine reveals on the nose a beautiful baked brioche evolving on apricot, honeysuckle, crème brulée, rose and canned pear. On the palate, the wine shows a soft entrance quickly evolving into a beautiful Greek honey yogurt with touches of wood, hazelnuts, honey and apricot lingering on caramel and prune liqueur. One of the earliest harvest for this variety to keep the freshness and purity of the aromatics.
