ACKER MERRALL SETS WORLD RECORD FOR MOST EXPENSIVE PORT EVER AS SINGLE BOTTLE OF 1863 NIEPOORT VINTAGE SELLS FOR US$128,000

“The greatest Port I’ve ever tasted,” exclaimed fifth generation   Managing Director Dirk van der Niepoort, who was in attendance when this remarkable Port from a bygone era, the 1863 Niepoort in a magnificent Lalique decanter, became the most expensive Port ever sold at auction, selling for HK$992,000/US$128,000.  Bidding was fierce from its opening bid, as the 1863 sold for over six times its presale estimate, electrifying an already excited crowd during a day in which Acker Merrall sold HK$53Million/US$6.8Million of the world’s greatest wines.  This was also an auction whose penultimate feature, the world-class “Everest Collection,” stood out above the rest thanks to an amazing compilation of the best of the very best from a man who has summited Everest himself.

“It is a thrill to stand on the podium when incredible wines set remarkable World Records.  Nearly a million Hong Kong dollars for a single bottle of the 1863 Niepoort is a testament to the longevity of these great wines and the family that has led this house for five generations.  To have Dirk van der Niepoort present during the auction made it even more extraordinary, and one I am sure subsequent generations of his family and Port lovers around the world will talk about for decades,” said Acker Merrall and Condit Companies Chairman John Kapon.

The Story

Vintage Port maintains Niepoort's tradition of making balanced Ports with great concentration, being at the same time fine and delicate. We strongly believe we can make a Vintage Port with potencial to last for decades. Vintage Port must be bottled within two or three years of the harvest date.

The magic of Vintage Port is different in every phase: as a young wine it captures the youthful fruit characters. Then, after 20 years or more, the effects of the slow bottle age integration are revealed and finally, after many decades, the spirit dominates the wine. Vintage Port is amazing in all the three phases. Half sweet taste, combining with its strong structure. Firm and long tannins, but balanced as a whole. Please, note that Vintage Port needs to be decanted. Perfect with "Queijo da Serra", Stilton or other blue cheeses and with egg desserts, like the portuguese "Pão de Ló".

Written Notes

Perfect bottle directly from Dirk's cellar.. Decanted 15 minutes. Medium-dark deep ruby colour. An elegant, spicy, complex nose. Very full and intense wine. Generous mouthful of wild berry, smoke, black cherries and dried fruit flavors and aromas. Quite vigorous, but it has soft fruit there. Still very much alive and has a creamy, warm ending. Super good.
