The Story

In the heart of the Rhône Valley, this small chapel has become one of the world’s great historic buildings
La Chapelle, the jewel of Maison Jaboulet, has a rich and emotive history.
During the 13th century, a knight called Gaspard de Sterimberg settled in the hills of Tain l’Hermitage with the permission of Blanche de Castille. On his return from the crusades, he sought calm and serenity and isolated himself as a hermit, hence the name of the Hermitage appellation. There he built a Chapel, overlooking the Rhône Valley.

La Chapelle endured the passage of time and finally became the property of Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné in 1919.
Hermitage “La Chapelle” is a blend of terroirs, including the prestigious hillsides of Méal and Bessards. Each one provides its own aromatic characteristics, as well as an elegant tannin structure, giving the wine great ageing potential.

Since the legendary 1961 vintage, which was classed as one of the Twelve mythical wines of the 20th century, Hermitage “la Chapelle” has become one of the world’s most sought-after wines.
Its fame has led Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné to revive a historical tradition by producing a few bottles of 2006 “la Chapelle” white wine.

The diversity of “terroirs” on these lands gives our wine an identity of its own, thanks to the blending of grapes from different plots.

Soil:
The Syrah vines are planted in rich and varied soils with very diverse terroirs (les Bessards, les Greffieux, le Méal and les Rocoules).
It is the richness of these different terroirs that provides our Hermitage La Chapelle with its complexity.
Grape Variety:
Very old Syrah vines; goblet pruning on stakes.
Age of the vines:
40 to 60 years.
Vinification:
Grapes are brought down from the slopes of l’Hermitage on small sledges, after which they are sorted by hand and vinified traditionally in our wineries
Final blending is carried out during the ageing process and is done through judicious selection from the different terroirs of l’Hermitage.
Ageing:
La Chapelle is aged in wood in our ancient “VINEUM” cellar for 15 to 18 months. During this process the wines are also racked.
Yield:
Low yields of 10 to 18 hl/ha.

Only to be rivaled by a 1961 that I had in 2004. It was one of the greatest La Chapelles I have ever had and certainly (97+) point

This had a marvelous perfumed nose, redolent with dark fruit, garrigue, spices and pepper. The wine is just delightful, a more grown up, sophisticated version of the ’45, lacking some of its zest, but expressing beautiful composure, seductive in its remarkable balance. You get licorice and sweet truffles past the mid palate, it is showing somewhat more lavish fruit than its more famous ’61 sibling, thyme and provencal herbs emerge next, and the beautifully cushioning tannins are evident in the midst of the sumptuous fruit, all cohering so wonderfully on the brilliantly elegant, panache-filled finale. 97 Points+

1959

'Deep, dark, mature colour. Complex, dried attic apples on the nose, even Seville oranges. Dried Grisons beef and dried leaves. Such sweet treacle on the palate. Toast with prune jam. The fruit is still luscious, full of damson richness, softness and chocolate vintage.'
SERENA SUTCLIFFE, MW 09/2000

'I have had a half-dozen bottles of 1959 La Chapelle, and have always rated it in the upper nineties. At the Jaboulet tasting, it appeared to be more evolved, with a saturated garnet color, and a big, cedary, meaty, dried herb-scented bouquet with abundant smoke and spice. In the mouth, alcohol was burning its way through the flavors, and one could clearly see this wine was the product of an extremely hot, sunny year. Lusty, fully mature, but becoming disjointed, with the fruit fading and the alcohol and tannin taking over, this remains an outstanding wine, but I am convinced that pristine bottles are far better than this showing, and should be drunk over the next decade. In this condition, the wine requires immediate consumption.' (90)
ROBERT PARKER’S – WINE ADVOCATE 06/2000

'Very lovely, very full, mature colour. Well matured now. This is obviously a more old-fashioned vinification system, and it shows on the nose. There are more stems here. More burnt flavours. Vinification at a higher temperature. Full, fat, robust and vigorous on the palate. This is very fine. But it is a bit burly compared with the 1964 and 1966. Slightly hot at the end even. And, because it is not so classy, not as so long, lingering and complex. Needs food. Fine plus.'
THE VINE CLIVE COATES, MW 12/1999

'At age 40, this is holding up beautifully despite a large crop. What impresses is the sweet fruit layered thick on the mid palate, delivering plum, vanilla, brown sugar, smoke and leather notes. The tannins melt, and the finale is still fresh and balanced. A delight to taste. Drink now through 2005.' (94)
