The Story

Pol Roger recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne. Established in 1849, Champagne Pol Roger remains family-owned and proudly independent to this day. Pol Roger, the 1831 born founder of the house, had lived in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ his whole childhood. The whole family supported the enterprise of their son. From early on Pol Roger focused in exports, and the English market was the most important one from the beginning. The commercial success of the company had its roots in the business model where they produced other champagne brands in the Pol Roger facilities. Pol Roger is one of the few remaining family owned Grande Marque champagne businesses.

The must undergoes two débourbages (settlings), one at the press house immediatly after pressing and the second, a débourbage à froid, in stainless steel tanks at 6°C over a 24 hour period. A slow cool fermentation with the temperature kept under 18°C takes place in stainless steel with each variety and each village kept seperate. The wine undergoes a full malolactic-fermentation prior to final blending. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle at 9°C in the deepest Pol Roger cellars (33 metres below street level) where the wine is kept until it undergoes remuage (riddling) by hand, a rarity in Champagne nowadays. The very fine and persistent mousse for which Pol Roger is renowned owes much to these deep, cool and damp cellars.

Eclectic Fine Wine sale includes bottles of 1952 Pol Roger Champagne

Bonhams Fine & Rare wine sale on 5th July at New Bond Street will include several wines from important years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. Two bottles of Pol Roger Champagne 1952, the year of her coronation, will go under the hammer, along with a bottle of Pol Roger 1973, altogether estimated at £1,100 - 1,300. The two fine bottles from 1952 were carefully selected to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee and are labelled as Special Reserve for the Silver Jubilee of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II in 1977.

Other fine wines ready to drink to celebrate the Queen's reign include five cases of 1952 Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion (estimated at £1200 - 1400 per dozen) and Port from the year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977 - six magnums of Warre, estimated at £440 - 520 and a dozen bottles of Graham (estimate £400 - 480).

Further highlights from the sale include several lots from a range of private sellers and country estates. A dozen bottles of Romanee Conti 1985, one of the finest of wines of Burgundy are offered by a London collector at £80,000 - 100,000, as well as two cases of the 1988 vintage (£60,000 - 80,000) and six bottles of 1993 (£28,000 - 34,000). Other exquisite wines from private cellars include three bottles of Krug 1959 Champagne (£1,200 - 1,500), six bottles of Chateau Latour 1961, estimated at £1,600 - 2,000 each, two magnums of Quinta do Noval 1927 Port (£500 - 600 each), four bottles of Graham 1935 Port (£1,200 - 1,400) and six bottles of Graham 1945 (£1,700 - 2,200).

Two major country estates are offering a good selection of fine wines in the sale. A rare bottle of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1907, estimated at £1,000 - 1,300, is offered from Stobhall Castle, one of the ancestral seats of the Drummond family and, until recently, the home of Viscount Strathallan, heir to the Earldom of Perth. The contents of Stobhall castle were recently sold by Bonhams in a sale in April. Various vintages of single vineyard Côte-Rôtie from Guigal have also emerged from an Irish country house, with the top lot, three bottles of Côte-Rôtie, La Mouline 1978, estimated at £4,600 - 5,200.
