The Story

The Syrah is from a special vineyard close to our house that is very marginal but unbelievable. The vines are young but it’s a vineyard I want to walk a path with for the sake of sheer individuality! In the cellar, minimal intervention along with new and old large format French Oak is combined to ensure that the essence of South African terroir is captured in the wines

Wine Information

“When I tasted the 2014 after bottling, I was super impressed. But it was only after tasting the wine again months later that I realized that this wine had evolved to take on multiple levels of extra complexity and depth, suggesting I had perhaps underscored the first release at 93/100? With hindsight on my side, and the knowledge that the 2015 vintage was one of the nest vintages in South Africa in a decade, I approached this Syrah with added attentiveness. Its beauty lies in its typicity: an homage to the great pure Syrah reds of the Northern Rhône. The nose unfurls layer upon layer with crushed black peppercorns, black berries, bramble berries, salty blackcurrant and savory forest spices. It has an alluring perfume of violets, cherry blossoms, and white owers. The palate has plenty of dusty crushed granite minerality and sweet peppery spice. It is richly textured, bold and powerful, but elegance is never sacri ced for power. The nish is luxurious, suave and very long with pink musk, peppercorn spice and savory black olive tapenade complexity. It will drink well from release but should age and improve effortlessly for 10+ years at least. One of the best classical Syrah’s in South Africa?” —94/100 Greg Sherwood MW
