Written Notes

The Flagship wine from Te Mata, it comes from selected plots from the Coleraine Vineyard, which is the home of owners, John and Wendy Buck (every chance you’ll have seen photos of it in any book on Kiwi wine, as it is an impressive sight). The blend is much more devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon than the Awatea, with 60%. Also 28% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. When seen side by side, there are years where I think that Awatea tops Coleraine (2014 is not one of them) but when Coleraine gets it right, it soars to heights which Awatea can’t quite reach. This is a dark, almost opaque purple. Strong and enticing aromas of chocolate and dark plums, blackfruits and leather. A finely crafted wine with excellent length. Balanced and seamless. Still young, of course, but with an exciting future. Very impressive.
