The Story

The Erdener Treppchen vineyard is so steep that long ago, stone steps (Treppchen translates as little stairs) were built into the hillside to enable workers to reach the vines. This site was rated as a ‘First Vineyard’ (Erste Lage) in the 1868 Prussian classification of the Mosel, a reputation it has kept over the last 150 years. The iron rich, red slate soils provide the elements for a wine with a muscular structure and bracing minerally complexity. Naturally light in alcohol (about 8% ABV) with notes of passion fruit, grapefruit and lime, it has a weighty mouth-feel and positive acidity that keeps its medium-dry finish balanced.

Situated on Germany’s Mosel River the Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years. When Ernst Loosen assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that, with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s top-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class Rieslings. To achieve this, Ernst immediately changed the estate’s vineyard practices to dramatically reduce crop size. He stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers and soil amendments. He extended his commitment to sustainable practices beyond the vineyards and into the winery, implementing improvements in materials recycling, energy efficiency and water conservation.

Wine Information

80% of the grapes grown are Riesling and many of the vines are 60-70 years old - the area around Bernkastel and much of the middle Mosel was never affected by phylloxera, so these are the original ungrafted vines. Loosen has an organic approach to viticulture and yields are very low by German standards. These are impeccably crafted wines that display the character of their respective vineyards as well as Loosen`s winemaking genius.
