The Story

Wine Making: The grapes are picked up in Amarone wine in good time to keep the acid balance of the full-bodied wines intact. Grapes drying is called the appassimento, where the grape concentrations drop by up to 40%. Before ancient times, the grapes were dried with roof pellets, now drainage takes place in air-conditioned rooms.

Origin: Grapes to this wine come from the finest sites in Valpolicella Classico region.

Tasting notes: Deep ruby red colour. Nose shows sweet dark fruit, plum and cherry as well as Christmas spices with some eucalyptus in the background. Taste is very mellow and sweet for red wine. Mature cherry and dark chocolate.

Food recommendation: As such or with a strong, mature cheese or game

Wine Information

PRESS:

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate  –"The 2009 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a richly-layered wine with opulent tones of plum cake, cinnamon snap, jammy fruit and dark raisin. There’s a tight and focused nature to this wine that underlines its fine quality and aging potential. The extraction is there, and so are the tannins and acidic components. Spicy tobacco and leather last long in the mouth. The wine is aged 36 months in large oak casks. Drink 2015-2025. (ML)  (10/2013)

93 points Wine Enthusiast  –"This opulent Amarone offers an alluring fragrance of dark fruit, raisin and toasted notes. The lush palate delivers black cherry, vanilla, black pepper and nutmeg flavors, with a hint of oak and tobacco. This is incredibly smooth, with velvety tannins. — K.O." (11/2013)

92 points Vinous   – "Sweet tobacco, plums, cherries, incense and grilled herb notes waft from the glass in the 2009 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. Soft and accessible, the 2009 doesn't look to be one of the most ageworthy wines to emerge from this cellar, but it is absolutely delicious today, and what is wrong with that? I expect this vivid, expressive Amarone will drink well for the better part of the decade. (3/2014)

92 points Wine Spectator  – Subdued notes of dried black cherry, prune, dark chocolate and grilled herb are underscored by smoky sous-bois details in this tightly knit, balanced red. The sinewy tannins lend some muscle. Should benefit from short-term cellaring. Best from 2017 through 2027. 1,250 cases imported. –AN (1/2014)

91 points James Suckling – A firm and reserved style of Amarone with mint, light dried berry and stone character. Full body, silky tannins and a fresh finish. Better in 2015. (12/2013)
