The Story

Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque is the original Belle Epoque vintage cuvée, first appearing in 1964. Instantly recognisable throughout the world, its bottle is adorned with the graceful spray of Japanese white anemones created for Maison Perrier-Jouët by Art Nouveau master Emile Gallé in 1902.

Working at the vat, plot by plot, the Cellar Master tastes and tests time and again, finally isolating the wines, turning each cuvée into a unique wine that expresses all the characteristic elegance and finesse of the House of Perrier-Jouët. "I throw myself into each composition with one combined effort, like the creative flow of an artist, at that moment when intuition, sensitivity and skill somehow inexplicably come together." Hervé Deschamps.

In 1902, Emile Gallé designed a delicate spray of anemones to be engraved on the prestigious cuvées of Perrier-Jouët Champagnes. The House has remained loyal to this artistic heritage ever since.

For Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque, Séverine Frerson specifically selects Pinot Noir grapes from two crus, Verzy and Mailly-Champagne, in the north of the Montagne de Reims, both characterised by their chalky soils. “Pinot Noir grapes from Mailly-Champagne in particular have an elegance and finesse that harmonise perfectly with our signature Chardonnay from Grand Cru terroirs in the Côte des Blancs,” she says. “They therefore enhance, rather than overwhelm, the delicate floral structure of the wine.” The result is an elegantly structured cuvée with a clear floral dimension, making Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque an outstanding example of the art of blending in the Perrier-Jouët style.

Wine Information

A pale gold, clear and luminous, like an autumnal sun. Aromas of ripe, juicy pear, a hint of citrus (yellow grapefruit, lime), green pepper and ginger. A subtle salinity. A generous, lively attack and a lush, creamy texture. Floral notes of linden blossom, complemented by pear, mandarin and grapefruit zest.

While every vintage of Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque naturally expresses the characteristics of its particular year, the personality of this iconic cuvée is clearly defined: poise, harmony and elegance combine to captivate the senses, with its bright gold colour and subtle sparkle an inviting prelude to rich nuances of white flowers and white-fleshed fruit. A long, expansive finish testifies to the rare quality of this exceptional champagne.

Vuosikerta 2013

2013 was a year in which the usual pattern of the seasons was delayed, with a cold winter and a cool, wet spring resulting in the vines flowering more than two weeks later than average, in the first days of July. Fortunately, the eventual outcome proved well worth the wait: after a dry, sunny summer, autumn brought favourable conditions up until harvest, which began on 30 September. This last October harvest of recent years yielded clear wines with a good balance of alcohol and acidity.

Belle Époque 2013: The latest of this magnificent line of champagnes opens with the full sea breeze experience. We also have florals, jasmine, citrus, spices, a wonderful briny note. This is a richly flavored champagne that is already exhibiting good complexity with more to come.

Hints of ginger on the palate. There is terrific length and a creamy texture. Frerson sees notes of lime blossoms, characteristic of the vintage. For me, it is more oyster shell/sea breeze.

This superb champagne provides more compelling evidence that anyone who overlooks the best champagnes from the 2013 vintage is doing themselves a disservice – I am hoping to provide more evidence of the glories and surprises of both the 2013 and 2014 vintages from Champagne very soon.

This champagne spent 60 months on lees. 95.

Incredibly similar to how 2012 tasted exactly one year ago. Of course, I tasted them side by side when the new vintage was delivered by DHL to my home yesterday to be able to make the comparison. A little more citrus, a little less vanilla essence, but actually extremely twin-like in its beautiful Hervé Deschamp construction. A superbly beautiful slightly shy subtle perfume, fluffy creamy Cramant with light citrus, white flowers, powder box and caressing softness with a shower of dried strawberries beaten to a powder in a Pacojet. As always, a wonderful champagne to realax with on the soft sofa with Duke Ellington in the background. Jazz in a bottle!

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is yellow, straw, and looking clear and light. On the nose it is intense and fresh. The taste is fresh, voluptuous, robust, and dry, and high in acidity, light, with balanced structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has floral, tropical fruits, mineral, creamy and white fruits flavours. The finish is long. This wine is excellent. I paid around 100-200€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years, decant at least 30min before tasting and this is a good invest wine. Good value for money. I do recommend.

Bright yellow with almost green hue. Very elegant nose with fragrant and crisp character, fine Brioche, hints of zests, ripe pear, greengage and Mirabelle, hints of white blossoms in the background. On the palate well-structured with good mousseux, shows depth and length.

Fresh, fruity, apples. Intense, dry, fresh, solid, silky smooth texture. Lingering dense finish. – JL 92p. (3/2023)

Sisäpiiritietoa

Art Nouveau was an international movement, known as Modernista in Spain, Jugendstil in Germany, Secession in Austria and Slovenia, Stile Liberty in Italy and – after the name of one of its exponents – Tiffany in the United States.

It rose to prominence in Barcelona and Brussels in the late 1880s thanks to the work of pioneering architects like Antoni Gaudi and Victor Horta, and went on to influence all visual arts, especially the decorative arts. It also drew on the works and theories of the Englishman William Morris, who had drawn a strong distinction between craftsmanship and the mass production of industry that was indifferent to aesthetic concerns.

Art Nouveau spread rapidly throughout Europe – in France it was propagated by Emile Gallé’s Ecole de Nancy – before declining in 1914, with the outbreak  of World War I. As fleeting as it was, this stylistic adventure – a reaction to the excesses of industrialisation – struck a chord: Art Nouveau offered extraordinary liberty, a joyous creative spirit and a comforting sense of enchanting possibility.

Emile Gallé was one of the founders of the Art Nouveau movement. In 1912 he designed a bottle for Perrier-Jouët featuring Japanese anemones.
This design has become world famous and still graces the bottles of our Cuvée Belle Epoque champagnes.
Emile Gallé travelled to Japan several times in his life and took a great deal of inspiration from Japanese art and flowers.

The Japanese influence was one of the predominant themes in the Art Nouveau movement.
Other famous artists from the Art Nouveau movement include Hector Guimard, Louis Majorelle and Lalique.
