The Story

Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia. Grange utilises fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district, blending philosophy.

Wine Information

No other red wine in Australia can rival the reputation, consistent quality or proven development pattern of Penfolds Grange.

The pinnacle of the Penfolds red wine range, Grange is a rich, opulent, full-bodied Shiraz, destined for a long cellar life.
The winemaking process involves great attention to detail; from selecting the best possible grapes sourced from low-yielding,
old Shiraz vines through to fermentation and fastidious oak maturation.

The unique and distinctive Grange style is based on ripe Shiraz fruit and stylish American oak in fine harmony.

The 1982 Grange is predominantly Shiraz with a
small amount (6%) of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Grange Vineyard Region Kalimna (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Clare
Valley, Magill and Modbury (Adelaide Plains).

Vintage Conditions A very good vintage in South Australia with a mild growing season which ended with a burst of warm weather.

Grape variety Shiraz (Syrah), Cabernet Sauvignon

Maturation Matured in new American oak
hogsheads for 18 months.
Wine Analysis A lc/Vol: 13.50%
Acidity: 6.90g/L

throughout, very elegant and supple but
undeniably a full-bodied wine with an
assertive tannin finish.

Written Notes

Wonderfully warming and comforting in this freezing Swiss ski resort. Almost more of a syrup than a wine, arguably declining very gently now. Round, sweet and not too obviously alcoholic with a lightly dusty finish. Like licking Barossa dust. Not a trace of the very firm tannins that are always so evident in a young Grange. I think this vintage, containing 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, may well have been the one I tried out on a tv studio full of horrified French wine experts on Bernard Pivot’s famous show Apostrophes in 1988.

Deep brick red. Perfumed red cherry/ red currant/ tea leaf/ aromas with some raisin notes. Rich red cherry/ damson plum/ tea leafy flavours with fine slinky/ chocolaty tannins and underlying savoury notes. An idiosyncratic Grange at its peak of development. 94% Shiraz 6% Cabernet Sauvignon Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide), Modbury Vineyard (Adelaide), Clare Valley Blend. A mild growing season followed by a hot vintage.

Bottle in excellent condition and filled to bottom neck. Looking deep, ruby red and evolved. Intense, refined, fresh and generous on the nose. The taste is perfumed, balanced, complex, well-structured, concentrated and full-bodied. Long, extensive, lingering, pure and spicy. Excellent and intelligent. Decanted 2t and drink between 2020 and 2030. Costs about 500-1k€ per bottle.
