The Story

The grapes, coming from old vines, were taken to the winery in plastic boxes. On arrival in the winery they were rigorously inspected on a sorting table. The grapes with their stems were then slightly crushed and transferred to a traditional stone tank where they were foot trodden. Later, the grape spirit was added to stop the fermentation and fortify the wine.

Soils: Schist
Vineyards: “Socalcos” (terraces supported by stone walls) Age of Vines: 60+ years old
Aging: Two years in large Portuguese oak vats. Bottled without fining or filtration; a light sediment may form in the bottle over time.

TASTING

Color: Opaque
Nose: Excellent aroma expression and concentration, showing fresh berry fruit and gum cistus notes and soft spices hints. Palate: Engaging beginning that leads to a wine of excellent volume, with a solid structure of fresh, compact, finely- textured tannins. Long and lingering to the finish, with a remarkable aromatic explosion of berry fruit in perfect harmony with delicate notes of gum cistus. An engaging, balanced wine, with a great bottle aging potential.

Vintage 2016

The 2016 harvest in the Douro brought perfectly-timed rain that turned a good year into a great one. Fortunately, despite a challenging growing season and a much adjusted and delayed picking schedule, those producers with excellent vineyard knowledge and confident decision-making, were rewarded with spectacular Vintage Ports.

Written Notes

I’ll confess, a personal favourite when it comes to port producers, so it was fingers crossed this stood up as one would wish. No need to worry. A star of the vintage. The finesse and purity, evident in the best of the vintage, are all too apparent here, backed up by some serious power. We have florals, a gentle sweetness that does not intrude, and a dedicated focus. The class and the pristine fruit of this stellar vintage is on show here. Love it. 97.
